I asked again.
This is how it goes. Three federal agents walk in, show credentials
and give you a list of the names of the people they suspect have
fraudulent papers and ask for your copy of their employment records.

So far so good.

If you can't document due diligence you get charged right then.

Done via E-Verify, apparently. So far so good.

Once you show you did do all that was required they want to see the
employees. One showed up, 3 jumped over the fence.

Ok. They are called, one shows up. The feds aren't going to try and chase
them. So far, so good.

The guy that showed up told them there must be some horrible mistake.
They said "Sure there was". Then they took his phony documents, told
him if he wants to appeal he can go to the office downtown. At that
point the guy left.

Here's the problem. As soon as they identified he was carrying false
papers, he would be arrested. Right then. No hesitation. Anything less
would not be believable. The only thing I can think of is that the papers
were fine or they thought they were fine, and lacking any other probable
cause, he was told he could go downtown to retrieve them.

Then the office people got the old "You were
almost arrested, don't ever do it again" speech.

This makes no sense. The company did everything that was required. The
response to this should be a polite... "Whatever you say. Is there
anything else? If not, we need to get back to work."

When asked if they should pay the employees the money they were owed,
the answer was "You can't, they don't have valid SS numbers. There is
no way to properly report the income".

For the three that jumped, sure. For the other, no way. If he was illegal
and standing in front of the officers, he'd be in handcuffs.

As I said, something must be missing.

It started bordering on a Joseph Heller novel after that
"You really need to check out your employees"

"But E Verify was wrong"

... "OK officers, You have a nice day now" and they leave.

That is a silent raid.

Here's your chance to do some pro bono work for some of those poor, illegal,
tred upon, wet back, criminals you have such a bleading heart for. Trot on
down to your closest INS office and give em a piece of your mind.
