Two days of excellent boating!
Wonderful weekend. Friday was a beautiful evening. I got home from
work and hooked up to the small boat, and headed for Carlyle. Didnt' even change.Got tot he lake about 6:15pm and launched. Boat ran great with no problems. lapped the lake a few times, and ran into some people I've known for quite a while. stopped and tied on to there pontoon and we sat there had a pop and yacked a while. Took back off and checked out a couple little coves, then saw the time was about 8:00. Headed back to try to beat the flies and mosquitos. They're bad there at mid spring. I made it to the landing loaded up and came home. I would have loved to have stayed out longer but still had to work Sat morning, besides the bugs were getting terrible!. Saturday at noon, I closed shop and headed for the house. Took a shower got changed and loaded a snack cooler in the boat and back to the lake.(60 mi. one way) I called the nephews in Edwardsville and asked if they wanted to do some boating. "SURE!" I said clear it with your mom first, then if good, meet me at the West access marina at 2:00, which they did. Carlyle is about a half way point for the both of us. Actually they werre running a bit late ( about 3:30) and I was already in the water when they showed up. They called me on the cell phone and I came in to get them. We didnt' do any tubing, the water is still cold, but I took advantage of the time to let the kids drive the boat and showed them how to safely acceleerate, cruise, how to cross a wake etc, and keep their eyes on whas ahead and whats beside and to always be looking. It's a huge lake and with several boats out there you rarely see one coming close, but I also said to never anticipate the other guy slowing down or watching out for you. It's better to cut the throttle and swerve instead of thinking he well. Also to watch to keep a good distance from other boaters co9ming toward you because they may be pulling a skier that may swerve out; kinda like jumping out from behind a tree. ie boating is safe if you use some common sense. 7:00 rolled around and we headed in. I thought of taking a digital at one time, but so far I've baptized two cell phones in the lake and I figured that was enough. Speaking of.... instead of leaving the cell phone in my pants pocket while I'm at the ramp (last time I slipped on moss and went to my knees) I'll put the phone in the glove box, before launch and before retrieve. It works better that way. I'd take a digital camera but I know it would take up the drinking habit right from the start. yeah, el cheap disposable is the idea. |

It holds an H gear (GI type) first aid kit, mag light, spare batteries, camera, 4x folding binoculars, H/H GPS, Gerber multi-tool, gum, sunscreen, cream bug juice, whistle, 100' of parachute cord, fishing license and my boat registrations. Before I leave the house I toss in my wallet, cell phone and H/H VHF. Cell, camera and the paperwork are in ziplocks. I also take this bag when I'm going out on others boats. The dog, although color blind and not very bright, knows the backpack means "boat ride" and heads for the door when he see me with it. |

Burial at sea..... I have a friend who actually worked for the telco through the late 1990's and who has a 35' or 36' cruiser. He has dropped three or four cells in the drink while on his dock, or has fallen off the boat or dock into the water while holding his cell. -- The Tea Party's teabaggers are just the Republican base by another name. |

Took a shower got changed and loaded a snack cooler in the boat and back to the lake.(60 mi. one way) I called the nephews in Edwardsville and asked if they wanted to do some boating. "SURE!" I said clear it with your mom first, then if good, meet me at the West access marina at 2:00, which they did. Carlyle is about a half way point for the both of us. Actually they werre running a bit late ( about 3:30) and I was already in the water when they showed up. They called me on the cell phone and I came in to get them. We didnt' do any tubing, the water is still cold, but I took advantage of the time to let the kids drive the boat and showed them how to safely acceleerate, cruise, how to cross a wake etc, and keep their eyes on whas ahead and whats beside and to always be looking. It's a huge lake and with several boats out there you rarely see one coming close, but I also said to never anticipate the other guy slowing down or watching out for you. It's better to cut the throttle and swerve instead of thinking he well. Also to watch to keep a good distance from other boaters co9ming toward you because they may be pulling a skier that may swerve out; kinda like jumping out from behind a tree. ie boating is safe if you use some common sense. 7:00 rolled around and we headed in. Still time to do stuff on the lake before dark, but I had too much to do at home to prepare for Sunday morning. Took 'em to McDonalds and killed the fatted calf for them, then we parted ways. I would have loved to have gone out Sunday afternoon, but the temp was hot (about 90 by noon) and I was dead tired. But at least I got a couple good launches in already. Wish I could go back out Memorial Day weekend, but I'll probably be in Kansas decorating my great uncles grave (WWI veteran) and it will probably be the last time I go out there. PLUS an added bonus. The fuel prices here dropped from $2.89 USD a gal. to $2.69 and that was nice seeing I burned up about 20 gallons in the two days. I hope to do a lot more boating this summer. I may hav made a mistake by powering it u, and the screen cam on for a few moments ant then it was lights out. I pulled the battery off and left it on the dash of the car on the way home hoping that the heated sunlight would dry it out, and let it sit till that evening. If you can turn your oven down low enough so the case won't melt, you can try to dry it out in there. 120 to 140 degrees for 10 minutes or so won't kill the electronics, but you can mess up the case and buttons pretty easy, so you have to be careful. Warm it up, turn it off, then put the phone in there. I know someone who spilled a Coke into the display on their very expensive car radio. I pulled it apart as much as I could, and used water and circuit board cleaner to clean it out. Re-assembled it, and part of the display didn't work. We put it back into the car, and over the next two weeks the display board I couldn't take apart slowly dried out and began to work again. That was in SC summer heat. |

If it's not contaminated, you can usually dry them out thoroughly and they'll come back to life. The manufacturing of modern electronics is done with water-based flux for the solder. I re installed the battery and no avail. Dead. It's even worse here with the salt water. I'd remove the battery ASAP and flush the phone out in fresh water. A trip to the repair depot might be in order |

It's a huge lake and with several boats out there you rarely see one coming close, but I also said to never anticipate the other guy slowing down or watching out for you. It's better to cut the throttle and swerve instead of thinking he well. Also to watch to keep a good distance from other boaters co9ming toward you because they may be pulling a skier that may swerve out; kinda like jumping out from behind a tree. ie boating is safe if you use some common sense. 7:00 rolled around and we headed in. Still time to do stuff on the lake before dark, but I had too much to do at home to prepare for Sunday morning. Took 'em to McDonalds and killed the fatted calf for them, then we parted ways. I would have loved to have gone out Sunday afternoon, but the temp was hot (about 90 by noon) and I was dead tired. But at least I got a couple good launches in already. Wish I could go back out Memorial Day weekend, but I'll probably be in Kansas decorating my great uncles grave (WWI veteran) and it will probably be the last time I go out there. PLUS an added bonus. The fuel prices here dropped from $2.89 USD a gal. to $2.69 and that was nice seeing I burned up about 20 gallons in the two days. I hope to do a lot more boating this summer. It's starting out really good. Another thing is that the experience over the weekend has given a boost to get the other two ready. Especially the float for the 4th of July. Sounds like a great time! Burial at sea..... Reply: My boat camera is a Pentex Optio that is mostly waterproof. Now I think it is splash proof as leaked when snorkeling in Costa Rica. And I have a waterproof cell phone bag. |

You guys are too advanced for me I ahve had the same old beat up cell phone for three years. It didnt' ahve a camera, and the face is so worn that you can see a lot of electronic guts inside. Especially when you flip it open at night. the front glows like uranium. I call it the robo cop phone. one thing s that the wifes contract allows to get a new phone about every year. I have two new phones in the sock drawer. never used. They have cameras and gadgets I'll never use. Well, maybe the camera. Besides, her company has her carry a new blackberry tha they update often, so having a replacement phone isn't an inconvenience for me. But one thing I like about this phone I have is it's heavier than the new ones, and has really taken a beating. Whne it clanks I'll be saddened. But if going on a river cruise I'll probably take a fancy-schmancy one for it's christening. BTW, When out on the water, I have a panasonic VHS video recorder. It works great! $20.00 at the pawn shop. If it decides to cool off in the river, no great loss, except for the taped memories. Needless to say I'm not really that much of a digital guy. |

You guys are too advanced for me I ahve had the same old beat up cell phone for three years. It didnt' ahve a camera, and the face is so worn that you can see a lot of electronic guts inside. Especially when you flip it open at night. the front glows like uranium. I call it the robo cop phone. one thing s that the wifes contract allows to get a new phone about every year. I have two new phones in the sock drawer. never used. They have cameras and gadgets I'll never use. Well, maybe the camera. Besides, her company has her carry a new blackberry tha they update often, so having a replacement phone isn't an inconvenience for me. But one thing I like about this phone I have is it's heavier than the new ones, and has really taken a beating. Whne it clanks I'll be saddened. But if going on a river cruise I'll probably take a fancy-schmancy one for it's christening. BTW, When out on the water, I have a panasonic VHS video recorder. It works great! $20.00 at the pawn shop. If it decides to cool off in the river, no great loss, except for the taped memories. Needless to say I'm not really that much of a digital guy. Damn.
