Very slick if you are a major league consumer of on-line media and

Why? Does it take more intelligence than you have to operate it?

Hadn't thought about that...but...since Apple is controlling the
"apps"for the device, and use of Skype would interfere with sales growth
of its iPhone, I wonder if and when it would be available. It definitely
is not a phone as delivered. The iPad does a very nice job with movies
and still photos...saw that demonstrated at the local apple store this

There are only two retail stores in the Annapolis mall I visit regularly
when I accompany my wife there...the Apple store and Borders books.

Now, if we head over to the Tysons Corners mall in Virginia (once or
twice a year), I visit the Apple store there, the big book store, L.L.
Bean, and Restoration Hardware. There's also a first-class fairly
authentic southern Italian restaurant at that mall I like.

I buy most of my casual clothes from mail order houses, and my business
clothes from J. Press and Brooks Brothers.

Now, Loogy, you know my retail personal shopping habits. Isn't that
really exciting for you?

I have no experience with Iphones. You have AT&T and you are able to go

I suspect there would have to be an iPad specific app for that to
happen...I can't see apple allowing that.

Yeah, AT&T. I don't use Skype a lot.. I have unlimited minutes, but every
once in a while I can't get on their network. It's pretty seamless. I pay
for an account, so I can dial non-skype numbers. I used to have a Skype
number, but no one ever called on anything but the land-line or cell number,
so it was just a waste of money.

Skype is a free app... I can't imagine Apple would care, since they don't
for the phone. The iPad has speakers and a microphone, so I think it would
have all the hardware required. I'll have to ask my Apple friend and see if
he knows something about any restrictions.

I would use it for movies and pictures. It has a microphone, so I
think
you
could use it with Skype... not sure about this.

Hadn't thought about that...but...since Apple is controlling the
"apps"for
the device, and use of Skype would interfere with sales growth of its
iPhone, I wonder if and when it would be available. It definitely is
not
a
phone as delivered. The iPad does a very nice job with movies and
still
photos...saw that demonstrated at the local apple store this past
saturday.

I have skype on my iPhone. Works fine.

I have no experience with Iphones. You have AT&T and you are able to go
around it via Skype? You make calls without using AT&T at all? That's
cool.

I suspect there would have to be an iPad specific app for that to
happen...I can't see apple allowing that.

--
http://tinyurl.com/ykxp2ym

Yeah, AT&T. I don't use Skype a lot.. I have unlimited minutes, but every
once in a while I can't get on their network. It's pretty seamless. I pay
for an account, so I can dial non-skype numbers. I used to have a Skype
number, but no one ever called on anything but the land-line or cell
number,
so it was just a waste of money.

Skype is a free app... I can't imagine Apple would care, since they don't
for the phone. The iPad has speakers and a microphone, so I think it
would
have all the hardware required. I'll have to ask my Apple friend and see
if
he knows something about any restrictions.

I'd guess it might be do-able with a 3G/4G iPad.

--
http://tinyurl.com/ykxp2ym

I think it's doable with just the wireless version... I don't really want
yet another AT&T account. That's what I'm hoping anyway.

Well, you are out of league with all this fancy telephone stuff. All I
use my cell for is to make and receive phone calls... :)

Amazon has written an app that makes Amazon's library available to the
iPad.

Think about all the content that's populating the web. You Tube can
now deliver HD that's stunning. ESPN has rebranded it's ESPN360 and
ESPN 3. Two channels on television, the third on the web.

That's why Comcast is making the play for NBC/Universal. Content is
going to be everywhere...

I'd opt for the 3G when it comes out, unless you're not in a 3G area.
You're smart to go for the max memory.

No, stupid...I am not a major league consuer of on-line media and

Maybe you'll be able to buy it ad hoc, whenever necessary. I'd just
get it for flexibility. I suppose if it's just a home toy, 3G may
never be necessary. Your iPhone is plenty good at gathering info
while on the road.

The only thing lacking in the iPad is the ability to play flash, which
is pretty critical if you're using it to surf/playback video.

Flash is getting to be very resource intensive and Jobs is hoping to
push everyone towards HTML 5 but the reality is that he'll have to
find a way to support flash unless he wants to limit iPad's utility.

I don't believe the iPhone uses flash, either. The iPad is, at its
heart, a bigger iPhone. Must be interesting to iPad to all those sites
incorporating flash videos and see what? A blank white rectangle? :)

My prediction is that a goodly number of iPads will be dropped on the
ground accidently as the leading edgers walk about town and look at
their screens instead of the sidewalk or whatever is in front of them.
You already see some of this with the iPhones, but it is easier to keep
a grip on the iPhone.

Some phones, like Blackberrys, can double as a modem for a laptop. Look

I don't need a modem for my laptop computer. The iPhone is perfectly fine
for email and such. It's not big enough for serious web-browsing or movies.
If I really need to do some serious computer work on the road, I take the
laptop and the iPhone. It's rare, so I'd rather have something for fun.

Part of the reason Jobs is keeping flash off his platform is that it's
an app, that can invite other apps to play. That breaks their
monopoly.

iPad will likely find a way to play flash through another Apple store
application, which will disable any external Flash apps from running.

It's a tricky business to run a monopoly.

I'm waiting for the HP slate, it'll be a normal pc, open to whatever
runs on pc.
