Good ol' ICOM

I've got an ICOM IC-M71 portable VHF that lives in my offshore fishing
bag, which I haven't even peeked into for maybe eight months. Maybe
longer. (I have a much smaller fishing bag for Bay use here).

Anyway, I was poking around in the garage, looked in the bag, pulled out
the radio. Damned if the rechargeable battery was still showing two out
of three bars.

Took the radio down to the marina, where I was dropping off something,
and picked up a conversation out the Bay. No biggie, except I was
surprised the battery wasn't flatlined. The rechargeable in my portable
GARMIN gps, which lives in the same bag...not so good... :)

been a ham for 20 years...used icom for everything. great radios. a
bit pricey, but well worth it.

VHF is a pretty good deal on Chesapeake Bay, because you are hardly ever
out of range of shore operators and many other boats. It's a long bay
but typically only 8-10-12 miles wide in most places. Cell phones work
pretty good, too. I also like ICOM VHF gear.
