Anybody who's lived in the northeast for any amount of time will tell
you that you can drive in a lot of different conditions, but leave the
car in the garage if you've had an ice storm.

My 1st experience with black ice was when I became an oilfield
engineer in Wyoming in 1980. I was fresh from Florida and had never
driven on ice. Before leaving Casper that night, I had thrown a spare
tire in the back of the truck because the truck had none. I had to
follow another truck at roughly 80 mph when I hit the ice. I never
had an opportunity to touch the brakes but started spinning like a top
and thinking "I am going to die", I lay over on the seat thinking she
would go off the road and roll over. Instead, she spun like crazy
many many times going down the raod and never leaving the road for
over a half mile. She spun so may times I was dizzy but I was ok and
the truck was ok. When I got to rig we were going to, I found a had
gotten a flat so went to get the spare I knew I had thrown in. It was
gone, my friend said he had seen it fly out of the enclosed bed and
dissapear into the air.

Back then, the WY DOT would not salt the roads, they simply spread
gravel and cinders on them. By Spring (early June), the roads all
resembled gravel roads. Not sure what they do now.
