John H I hope some heads roll over this. I'm behind the CG 102%, and they've done thousands of good things that never see the light of day. But someone seriously messed up here, and needs to man up. And most importantly, it needs NEVER to happen again. Accidents are accidents. Some accidents are preventable. And some are so ridiculously preventable that it makes the participants out for the foolish children they were during the incident. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I can't imagine having such a senseless loss. Steve |

Most of SD is sand bottom. |

My 23' boat has a USGS capacity placard that lists 10 people. My friend's 23' Mastercraft is rated for 12 people (go figure). I will say though that 10 or 12 bodies on a 23' boat makes for a cramped ride. 13 on a 24' boat would most likely be just as cramped. --Mike |

It said 8 people, but could have been a different sea ray. Sounds like the Coast Guard screwed the pooch on this one. -- Have a Super Christmas and a Spectacular New Year! John H |

IIRC, they assume about a 150# average per person. Rob |

A 24' Carolina Skiff will carry 18.... http://www.carolinaskiff.com/listman...ngs/l0010.html The capacity of the boat that was *hit* by the USCG isn't the issue here, as the accident was entirely the fault of the Coast Guard. Last year, when we were there, we saw several USCG and many USN and marine small vessels tearing ass their ways through the harbour and out to the ocean. Boys with toys, showing off. In fact, I remember the wife of the couple sitting next to us on the whale watching vessel saying, "Look, the boys found the gas pedal!" |
