How much of a chore is it to install one of these? How much work is
involved in rebuilding one? I have tons of tools, and fix stuff regularly.
I believe the Merc shop says it would run about $600.

Rebuilding one is a snap. Finding the parts may be problematic, but
if you have a patient NAPA parts supplier locally, you can find most
of the seals there. Worn piston and cylinder - that may be a different
issue.

There are parts suppliers on the web that have parts that aren't
overly expensive. Patience, time and a little looking around, you
could probably rebuild one for less than $75. Heck, a boat dealer
might have a unit hanging off a junk motor in back - never hurts to
look around.
