That sounds about right. I remember there were two options available...the radio and a gasoline powered supplemental heater. I could be wrong about the heater. Depending on the year, a Eperspacher gas fired heater was an option. Incidentally, early models of the Corvair, also used a gasoline heater. Sounds dangerous to me, but I guess it's an improvement on breathing exhaust fumes associated with many air-cooled car engines. |

The Corvair had some other problem with the rear suspension geometry, as I recall. It would break loose and switch ends easily if I recall. Bugs didn't do that. Think they fixed the Corvair by the 2nd or 3rd model year, but it's hazy. Tire pressures were critical. There was a 10# differential between front and rear, and the tire pressures were outside the manufacturer's recommended tolerances. Additionally, the front tires were overloaded if there were two or more passengers on board. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unsafe_at_Any_Speed |

We were in a VW cab the last time I was in the Yucatan We rented a Golf or something like it, to drive from Cancun to Mérida to Tulum and about a zillion points in between. I think we spent a total of four hours in Cancun, and most of that was at the airport. Took a day trip by ferry to Isla Mujeres, rented motor scooters. I understand that little island is now also overdeveloped. Yeah, sure everyone here believes you.....NOT. |

We were in a VW cab the last time I was in the Yucatan Yes, most of the cabs in Mexico City are bugs also. I was there on business for a couple of weeks and we had some of the strictest security precautions I've ever seen. In order to get a cab it had to be called by one of our people from an approved account. They would give me a car number and a password. My instructions were to not get in the cab unless the number matched, and the driver told me the password. It was interesting. Most of the drivers spoke little or no english and me espanol es mucho un poquito. |

Heck...a RAV4 is cheaper than that top of the line 2010 New Beetle. My first brand new car was a 1972 dark blue 'Super Beetle'. Back in those days the VW was the best of a questionable choice of small cars......... nowadays, not so much. Only true because the "new" beetle is not the original car or concept. They OUGHT to bring that automobile back. I had a new Beetle way back when...bought it when I was working at the KC Star. Fine car for getting around town, but...sheeesh...out on those Missouri two lane "highways," if a big semi-truck was coming from the opposite direction, the winds it created would damn near blow the Beetle right off the road. I love the car, though. Really reliable (ok...so I owned an MG-A so my point of reference isn't that high!)- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Yeah, of course...... Everyone here believes you. I understand that little island is now also overdeveloped. That was a pretty round about trip. Talum is just south of Cancun, Mérida is on the other side of the Yucatan That is where we went through Mexican customs, then we got back on the plane and flew to Cancun. It was funny because they didn't turn off the engines on the plane. I could imagine the pilot (in a Cheech Marin accent) saying "hey man, don't shut off the motor, I got a bad battery" The drive-around trip was a oneymoon trip...two weeks in Mexico. I had been to Cancun 20 years earlier, when there were only a couple of new hotels. On the second trip, we realized we had made the right decision by limiting our time in Cancun. Mérida was well-worth a two day stopover. |
