Flettner ship (and other interesting propulsion systems)
Stumbled across this today - never knew they were what they were
called though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flettner_ship Some different designs - some actually have been built. http://gcaptain.com/maritime/blog/oc...-ship-designs/ I wonder if I could try this on the Ranger. Might be fun. Need to find a cheap parasail though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdJRxm0hiTY Obligatory fishing video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sA-4wcaRM9w |

Might be fun. Need to find a cheap parasail though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdJRxm0hiTY Wonder how quickly fuel savings disappear when the para sail cable wraps around the screw shaft. No harm trying it out though. Obligatory fishing video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sA-4wcaRM9w Crazy stuff. Seems like way too much work and tangles. Fun flying a kite maybe, but a goofy way to fish. I can think of more fun ways to get out past the surf to fish remotely. Electric motorized surfboard deal, with radio controlled reel brakes releasing the baited hook(s) when you get in position. Mount a camera too. Maybe a GPS too. Control it all from a laptop on the beach. Predator fishing so to speak. Anyway, I don't care for any of it. I like to see/feel that rod tip bend over and the scream of the line overpowering the drag. Then, as you battle the fish in the hot sun, while encouraged to fight on by your mates, they taking turns wiping the sweat from your eyes as your arms ache more and more, you all wonder what power of the depths will surface from the seas at the end of your line. The battle is long and the shadows move across the deck as the sun arcs across the sky. Finally the catch is brought near the surface, and just in time, as your arms are now leaden weights. The sense of wondrous anticipation is by now unsustainable. Probably a good thing that you wake up. Besides that, you don't want the coffee your wife made you to get cold. Heavy coffee, BTW. That's how it works for me, anyway - when I'm lucky. --Vic |

Reminds me of the Savonius Rotor as found on buoys.. Similar |

Now, cereal in the those little boxes was ok - once you let the weevils float up and scooped them off. *Optional. --Vic Vic, wern't those packed in their for a protien suppliment? That's what I was told too. Never bought that. But how the commissaryman convinced me to shut up about it was telling me if I squawked too much he would have to throw ALL the cereal over the side. No way to tell which boxes had weevils. Since that cereal was the best food on the ship, I shut up quick. --Vic You hold the boxes up so the light's reflecting off the side and you can see the holes where they got in. Damn. He didn't tell me that. --Vic I learned by accident. After seeing the weevils in some corn meal I happened to catch the light just right on the box. -- John H |

I use about four heaping tablespoons of the stuff for six cups of coffee. Tastes better'n what the Army used to serve. Army coffee sucked and turned me off coffee forever. We had a head cook who worked at one of the better restaurants in Marin County, who knew how to spice foods. |

We had a head cook who worked at one of the better restaurants in Marin County, who knew how to spice foods. I had a mess sergeant in Germany who was a pastry buff. The regular chow was OK, but this guy would get up way before anyone else and fix all kinds of danish, cream rolls, etc. for breakfast. Truly a miracle worker in the field. Soon after that they took the mess section away from the company sized units and moved them up to battalion. That's when the Army went to 't-rations', no cooking involved, just heat the trays and serve. Everything tasted the same. Thank God for Tobasco. -- John H |
