Nov 11: Another Sacramento River sturgeon!
My fishin' buddy John joined me for a trip to Brannan and Decker
Island. We dropped anchor about 0830 at the same spot as the past few weeks, just off Decker Island and as close to the shipping channel as we could. Around 1030 he set the hook into a lazy sturgeon who didn't want to fight. In five minutes a 55" sturgeon was at the side of the boat. He was so lazy he didn't make even one run. He was a good looking fish, but acted very weird. We released him and kept at it 'til sundown, but no more action for us. A nearby boat caught a 75" and released it, and another just above the minimum size, by what we could see, and kept it. Another great sturgeon day! Photos on my homepage www.FishWisher.com Dale |

It's not the "WWs" that take too many sturgeon, it's the poaching (much of it by immigrant Russians)! California has about 170 sworn agents to enforce our wildlife laws. Uh, they have to be tagged, you only get to take a couple per year.
We get three tags per year now, and the slot is 46" to 66". So if you really like to fish for sturgeon, you have to release a lot of them so you keep that last tag 'til about Christmas. Unless, of course, you're a poacher and then there are no limits of any kind - and you'll likely never get caught in Kalifornistan where we'll send your illegal immigrant kid to college, but we refuse to protect our wildlife!
