Windlass project for my aluminum b oat is complete! (With photos ofthe project.)

I'm just too old and worn out to fight the anchor while standing at
the bow of a rather small boat. Having had a windlass on two prior
boats I decided I couldn't live without one even on this smaller boat.
At 65 I'm too frail - or maybe just too lazy - to hand over hand the
rode.

This was an install of the small Pro-Sport 550 which is selling all
over the 'net. I chose to have a 100' all chain "rode" once again, as
I've done in both prior installs.

Photos of the project as it proceeded are on my homepage, www.FishWisher.com,
then click on the top of the left column menu for the photos.

Whew. It was a big job for this old geezer! I believe I'll keep this
boat 'til my estate owns it.

Looking real good, Dale. Post when you try her out.
That chain made me think about something..
If you get anchor fouled and have to cut loose, how to you do it?
Carry boltcutters?

Since you have such a nice boat now, that windlass doesn't seem over the
top......especially if you anchor in deeper areas where you'd have to haul
in a couple hundred feet of rode.
On the other hand...65 doesn't seem very old anymore and you could consider
manually hauling in the rode as good exercise to help keep you in shape. ;-)

On that size boat I would have gone with line and not all chain. Lots of
weight and If you need to put out 200' of line in a fast river, will be hard
to extend the anchor rode.

With what an anchor and 100 feet of chain costs? You just stay
there......

That's why I use cheap anchors and rope on the S.S. Yo Ho.
Of course, I don't do any *serious* anchoring with that boat.

No more fall than is in evidence below the windlass would make the
attempt at stowing an all line rode a lot like herding cats......

That is the livewell he is using. There is an anchor locker forward. That
is deeper and larger on mine. Similar boat.

Windlass project for my aluminum b oat is complete! (With photosof the project.)

Hi guys,

Sorry to reply so late, but I just got in from a motorhome trip to San
Diego (from the Central Valley near Stockton) to see the grandsons
(age 8 & 5). I need some serious fishing and beer time to regain my
sanity! But first a motorhome trip to Denver.

100' of chain does sound a bit much, but on the delta I'm anchoring in
no more than 30'. 2:1 scope is all I really need for serious anchoring
even in the fast currents of the Sacramento and San Joaquin (which is
much of the delta). For foothill lake fishing, I can anchor in up to
80 feet just fine as there are no currents to deal with. The main
reason for chain is the drop - as Gene said - and of course, the
reduced scope required.

The weight of the chain is just 75 lbs., not a real issue considering
the advantages. And if I ever get an anchor stuck, I have a shackle at
the bitter end to keep the chain from going overboard. (I mark the
chain so I don't let out too much.) I'd have to remove the shackle and
kiss the approx $350 of chain and anchor good-bye. But in several
years of using the same set up, I've never had a problem. And I may
consider just staying put if I ever do really get hung up!

Hey Don, 65 is old when you have to stand on a rockin', rollin' bow
with no bowrails, the wind howling while pulling 100' of rode in hand
over hand against a current - especially when fishing alone. We lose
fishermen most years out on the delta, and that's one of the more
popular ways to make the final mistake!

Re fishing, NotNow, I gave up lake fishing a month ago as it has been
so poor this year. But as soon as I'm back from a some motorhome
traveling I'll be planning delta trips for sturgeon. I am so overdue -
and I have two sturgeon tags left of the three allowed per year to
attach to some big ol' hawgs. I can't wait!

....and many guys 65 years old take as long to whizz as to pull anchor
- maybe longer! I love my hospital urinal which is along on every
trip.
