Best Buy or Worst Buy
Almost got arrested. For graduation, we bought our son a nice
computer from Best Buy and had them set it up and paid for their best warranty. A few weeks later, it stopped working so we took it back. I went to get it today. They told me the operating system was bad and it would cost $129 to re-install it. Huh? I told them 'I bought it here and the operating system was on it so you sold me a bad system, so fix it for free". No, they would not. We went back and forth a few times before I decided everybody in the store should know their policy. Raising my voice I declared, "You mean to tell me you will not replace something you sell that is bad"? "Only hardware" they said. I made sure even more people heard this asking them over and over if they truly refused to replace products they sold that were bad. When I took the computer, I told everybody I passed that Best Buy would not replace faulty products. When I got outside, the manager came outside and said, "I did not want to embarass you inside by discussing this". I said "I do not embarass easily so lets go back inside so your customers can hear". He told me not to go back in. Then he told me to wait because he was going to call the cops to get a restraining order to keep me away but I laughed and told him I had no intention of coming back. I waited a minute because I thought it would be great if they had me arrested because they had never once asked me to leave, I could sue. It was too hot so I said, "See ya in court" and left. Then I went to two other computer stores and told them my story and they were shocked. One said, "Really, they won't replace bad software, thats amazing". |

It is unlikely "the operating system was bad." What is likely is that your son or some other computer user messed up some serious settings or downloaded a really nasty virus and *that* messed up the OS. Republican "town hall meeting" behavior doesn't really get you very far in the real world. So, what are you doing to resolve your non-working-computer problem? And why don't you have a way to backup your computers from good "restore" points? Sloppy. Further, if you bought a desktop system, the ethernet card probably is contained on a chipset on the motherboard, and there is no separate card. Some laptops also have integrated ethernet chips. Seems it should come with an install disk. Maybe a virus hosed it. I had a good experience with a big monitor - then - I bought at BB. As I recall the monitor was $400 and they were selling a 2-year BB replacement warranty for only $25, so I bought that too. It was a KDS 19" Good monitor, but a week before the warranty expired it went blank, and they gave me full price toward a better monitor. But now they wanted $75 for the same warranty. I bought it, but that one never paid off. Well, at least the first one did, which is the only time I got anything back from a non-car warranty. The only minor hassle I had was they wanted to send the monitor to the manufacturer. Not what the warranty said, I pointed out, and they quickly agreed. But I wasn't wearing caving gear. --Vic |

Well, whatever turns you on, but it's not going to really cost them customers in any significant way. I find it much more effective when a poor employee gets a call from his boss admonishing him about questionable behavior/practices. It's better for everyone, including the company. I had a problem with a car installation at Best Buy, and I did what I noted. Not only did they fix the problem, they gave me a card for $100 worth of product. When I went in to get the problem fixed, the manager who was kind of a jerk the first time saw me and apologized for the "mix up." -- Nom=de=Plume |

The first thing I do is get my OS and drivers off of the hard drive and onto CDs. Wife says Warranty cost was $205. The did not provide an OS install CD. In fact, for another roughly $100 they will sell you a restore disc. They charged my son to "Clear the Registry" so he would not have all the crap most store bought computers have. I do not know if this is a scam r not but suddenly, all the crap is back. The place I finally took it to for repair says they often see problems when a 2nd AV program is loaded atop Norton when they fail to remove Norton. The Warranty is sort of vague about software problems but ti does cover "problems due to poor workmanship" and failure to install the 2nd AV properly should be covered under this. I doubt I'll see a penny from BB. |

I doubt I'll see a penny from BB. You were...fleeced. Most low-end PC laptops and desktops these days are not sold with real install CDs/DVDs. What you get, if anything, are "restore" media. Not the same as real "install" media, and under many circumstances next to worthless for restoring an OS or transferring it to a new hard drive if the first hard drive fails. Interestingly, even the least expensive Apple Mac comes with a full install OS DVD. -- Birther-Deather-Tenther-Teabagger: Idiots All |

A story with a better though more costly ending. At work, I accidently destroyed an x-ray detector. These things have an x-ray "window" that is absurdly expensive made by a tiny company in Utah who has a patent on the process. These "windows" sell for a few thousand dollars each and are 4 mm diameter and .3 micron thick polyimide (yes, that is really 3 tenths of a micron). When they break, the cost to replace them is normally about $10,000 considering the labor of installing them and the risk of breaking one during the install. I desperately needed my detector so resigned myself to paying at least $10,000 and sent it off to a company called TNAS. Thye could have very reasonably said the window was broken and charged me for an absurd price. Instead, they fixed it for $2300 telling me that miraculously the fragile window did not break. So, I salute an honest company and will send them a lot of business. |

He freaked and said we could not go back inside. |

He got tossed down the steps at his local cop shop by...the cops. Does not matter. They have you arrested for complaining, and not telling you to leave the store. They will be financially hurt. |
