Right now am repairing the leak on the camper. It leaks around the ceiling vent because some of the screws missed the wood entirely. Fix involves epoxying an extra piece of wood so the screws have something to grab. Next project is to fix the lights on my Tolman Skiff trailer. I thought I was good at DC electronics...NOT, although its sorta hard to do anything when its dark out and you are sweating so much you cannot see. Next project is to put the new bimini on the sailboat, this should be easy (yeah, I've said that before). Then, sailboat has to be sailed from Shell Point, Fl to Carabelle to be hauled to have her prop strut replaced. Although only 36 miles, constant thunderstorms make it dicey (call me a wimp, I am afraid of them). Then I gotta put a new kicker mount on the Tolman. Maybe someday, I'll get around to fixin the second MiniCup sailboat and making a new sail for her. Did I ever mention the cabin in WY that needs to be rebuilt.......... |

Not yet, let me get it back on the truck and then I'll take some pics. From a distance, it looks good. Up close, you begin to see it is an amateur effort. The siding that I bought from an RV supplier looks good on the sides but on the front I had trouble bending it over the curve. Buying the windows and doors on line worked well and they look good. I still have not entirely figured out the jacks. There is also a lot of wasted space between the camper sides and areas in front and behind the truck bed wheel wells. I intend to put in some round boat type screw in ports to access those to access those areas but have not ordered them yet. I'd guess that total cost was maybe $3000. |

Wow, that's not bad at all! Reason for building it was that every time we wanted to go camping it was a major ordeal finding all the gear and loading it up. I thought that maybe having gear in a trailer like a pop-up would make it much easier so a few years I suggested this to my wife. GOD, you'd have thought I'd suggested castrating myself she was so derisive of the idea and has not allowed me to forget how I almost turned into a wimp by wanting a pop-up. She has this notion that camping is so macho and pure outdoorsy and using an RV is for geriatrics and pansies. So, when I started building the camper, I told her it was just to carry gear in but soon she saw it had sleeping room and started thinking about camping in summer in FL if I would put an AC in it. Then she got into thinking about it and soon she was making all the cushions. Now, she likes it. She actually put memory foam on the bunk although I hate the stuff. I just wanted 2" regular foam cuz I like really hard surfaces to sleep on but she insisted on 4" foam and then 1.5" of memory foam. |

I just wanted 2" regular foam cuz I like really hard surfaces to sleep on but she insisted on 4" foam and then 1.5" of memory foam. My Dad was quite resourceful and had a vivid imagination. He made a care topper camper for our 60 Plymouth Station wagon that laid flat and unfolded like a book. making a porch over the passenger side with aluminum poles to hold it up and we assembled a tent. at the camp sites dad got lots of compliments. That's back in days when people actually "camped" at camp sites. My dad built a "Vista Dome" camper in a 1948 panel truck. About 1953. Made Life Magazine. Used Plexiglas from B-26 bombers and heated in the oven to soften and form to the frame. Fold down bunks, etc. Neat camper, not as nice as my truck camper, but was an interesting vehicle. |

It was PVC plastic in place of where canvas usually is, with little sliding plexiglass windows, etc. I'm actually looking to get another pop up, probably canvas because I like the tent kind of feeling. The biggest problem is at the end of the weekend they have a lot of packing to do (takes them about 2 hours with 3-4 people and they need a travel carrier on the roof of the tow vehicle too as there is little room left in the trailer after you pack it to be taken down... They also have stuff strapped to the outside of the pop up.. Next year I want a hard top over me. I am looking at these buses they move elderly and handicapped with. They are nice and wide, lot's of windows, stand up room, and wide enough to put the bunks thwart wise for room. I would still carry the bikes and gear in a trailer behind us. That's my plan after camping nearly a dozen times this summer and getting washed out by violent storms every single weekend so far... -- Wafa free since 2009 |

Reason for building it was that every time we wanted to go camping it was a major ordeal finding all the gear and loading it up. I thought that maybe having gear in a trailer like a pop-up would make it much easier so a few years I suggested this to my wife. GOD, you'd have thought I'd suggested castrating myself she was so derisive of the idea and has not allowed me to forget how I almost turned into a wimp by wanting a pop-up. She has this notion that camping is so macho and pure outdoorsy and using an RV is for geriatrics and pansies. So, when I started building the camper, I told her it was just to carry gear in but soon she saw it had sleeping room and started thinking about camping in summer in FL if I would put an AC in it. Then she got into thinking about it and soon she was making all the cushions. Now, she likes it. She actually put memory foam on the bunk although I hate the stuff. I just wanted 2" regular foam cuz I like really hard surfaces to sleep on but she insisted on 4" foam and then 1.5" of memory foam. I had a hard sided pop up that I loved! It was PVC plastic in place of where canvas usually is, with little sliding plexiglass windows, etc. I'm actually looking to get another pop up, probably canvas because I like the tent kind of feeling. I like the pop up for just what you mentioned, all the gear is there. Before I go anywhere, I pop it up quick, take a look around, put perishable food away, close it up, haul ass! A guy has the trailer below for sale at Ft Belvoir. I'm trying to convince my daughter she should start with something like this, so they don't have to buy something new to pull it with. They have a Pilot now, which can handle something like the pop-up. My camp mates have a pop up.. The biggest problem is at the end of the weekend they have a lot of packing to do (takes them about 2 hours with 3-4 people and they need a travel carrier on the roof of the tow vehicle too as there is little room left in the trailer after you pack it to be taken down... They also have stuff strapped to the outside of the pop up.. Next year I want a hard top over me. I am looking at these buses they move elderly and handicapped with. They are nice and wide, lot's of windows, stand up room, and wide enough to put the bunks thwart wise for room. I would still carry the bikes and gear in a trailer behind us. That's my plan after camping nearly a dozen times this summer and getting washed out by violent storms every single weekend so far... Keep your eyes open for a used Dodge Sprinter. Right now am repairing the leak on the camper. It leaks around the ceiling vent because some of the screws missed the wood entirely. Fix involves epoxying an extra piece of wood so the screws have something to grab. Next project is to fix the lights on my Tolman Skiff trailer. I thought I was good at DC electronics...NOT, although its sorta hard to do anything when its dark out and you are sweating so much you cannot see. Next project is to put the new bimini on the sailboat, this should be easy (yeah, I've said that before). Then, sailboat has to be sailed from Shell Point, Fl to Carabelle to be hauled to have her prop strut replaced. Although only 36 miles, constant thunderstorms make it dicey (call me a wimp, I am afraid of them). Then I gotta put a new kicker mount on the Tolman. Maybe someday, I'll get around to fixin the second MiniCup sailboat and making a new sail for her. Did I ever mention the cabin in WY that needs to be rebuilt.......... Have you posted any pics of the camper yet? I'd like to see it! Not yet, let me get it back on the truck and then I'll take some pics. From a distance, it looks good. Up close, you begin to see it is an amateur effort. The siding that I bought from an RV supplier looks good on the sides but on the front I had trouble bending it over the curve. Buying the windows and doors on line worked well and they look good. I still have not entirely figured out the jacks. There is also a lot of wasted space between the camper sides and areas in front and behind the truck bed wheel wells. Tell ya, it's great to finish a long day in the mud and the sun, have a nice hot shower, a nice toddy, and a few hours sleep with the headphones on.
