Factory MPG figures are eeked out under the most carefully staged
conditions. The advertised HWY MPG for your vehicle is a figure you
might only achieve on a flat, smooth road, no passengers or A/c,5 psi
over-inflated tires, on a 58° day with 65% humidity, at 4000ft
elevation. YMMV, usually a rather big amount from the "HWY" figure.
I drove a new Jeep Liberty rental for a while in 2003. That POS got
amazingly poor mileage, prolly 10-12 MPG city. My F250 390 gets that.

My F-250, 7.3 liter diesel, got 16/17 around town and 22/23 on the
highway.

My F-150, 5.4 liter Triton gets12/13 around town and an amazing 17 on
the highway.

Go figure.

My 8.1 GM gets 6 or 7 around town and an amazing 6 or 7 on the highway.
I wonder if i could get in on the big Obama giveaway if I traded for one
of those 20MPG imports with the Mercedes engines.

The figuring is pretty easy actually. Diesels extract almost twice
as much horsepower from a gallon of fuel. I have a neighbor with a
F-350 crew cab dually diesel who gets about 19 on the highway when
he's not towing. That's considerably better than my 4.7 liter Tundra
which is much smaller and lighter.
