Family got me a set of Dr. WHO DVDs in the hopes I'd watch TV. It
works. Kinda addicting although silly. Each episode is just long
enough to not lose my interest, and no damn commercials.

New episodes, better Special FX, new actors, not bad for a weekly
show. Most of em are not that good but one called "Blink" blew me
away. No violence, no real monsters but truly bizarre. I gotta give
credit to the writer of that one. Afterwards, I just sat there and
thought "Whoa, that was really weird"..

Which series - the first of the "new" Davies written/directed with
Ecclestone or the second set with Tennant which was a combination of
Davies and Moffet writing and directing?

Series One with Chris Ecclestone (Dr. Who) and Bille Piper (Rose
Tyler) is a good place to start - most of those are great episodes.

It really gets rolling in Series Two with David Tennant (Dr. Who) and
Piper. Series Three really gets starts off with a really good couple
of episodes, a few so-so episodes and ends with a bang - Martha Jones
(Freema Agyeman) as his Companion starts off slow, but she gets the
idea about four episodes in and becomes one of the better companions.

The best though is Series Four with Catherine Tate as Companion Donna
Noble - there isn't a lousy episode in the bunch.

I really like what they did with the Cybermen and Daleks - they made
them understandable for non-Who viewers and filled in a lot of the
back story of Dr. Who. The one thing I didn't like was including The
Master - that requires a lot of backstory detail and according to the
new Who fan reviews, they didn't quite understand the role that The
Master played in Dr. Who's universe as last of the Time Lords.

"Blink" was very well received and won a number of awards. It was
written by Stephen Moffat and directed Hettie MacDonald both of whom
are high regarded BBC contributers.

It was one of the episodes that I watched twice back-to-back - there's
a lot going on in that episode and you don't catch everything at first
viewing.

There two episodes in Series Four - "Forest of The Dead" and "Silence
in The Library" that are very similar - "Forest of The Dead" is
another award winner.

Last I saw of Dr Who was in the early 80s but saw "Blink" on an
overseas flight and was amazed and came home talking about it so the
kids got the series for me from Amazon.

There are cheaper places. One advertises Series 1-4 22 DVDs for $70.
