1969 - Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.
1976 America's Viking 1 robot spacecraft landed on Mars. 2003 - In India, elephants used for commercial work began wearing reflectors to avoid being hit by cars during night work. 1946 - The Pan-Galactic Super Genius Evil Overlord appeared in this mortal realm to monitor his subjects from within. |

Happy birthday, old guy.....! Getting old sucks, but it beats the hell out of the alternatives.... That it does - any morning you wake up is a good one at this age. :) Actually, I don't feel like I've been on this planet for 63 years - more like 30. 1946 was a very interesting year. Project Diana bounces radar waves off the Moon, measuring the exact distance between the earth and the moon, and proving that communication is possible between Earth and outer space, effectively opening the space age. Interesting in that my Dad, W1QGN, was bouncing CW signals off the moon less than 6 years later. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Diana The Canadian schooner Bluenose foundered on a Haitian reef. In the first underwater test of the atomic bomb, the surplus USS Saratoga is sunk near Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, when the United States detonates the Baker device during Operation Crossroads. Which, oddly, led to the introduction of a new two piece bathing suit named after Bikini Atoll. The first Tupperware is sold in department and hardware stores. USS Anderson, Carlisle, Gilliam, Lamson and Sakawa were sunk at Bikini Atoll in Operation Crossroads as a test targets. Percy Williams Bridgman won the 1946 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the physics of high pressures. He also wrote extensively on the scientific method and on other aspects of the philosophy of science. One of the people who influenced my life tremendously. |

Caught an item on a CTV Morning Show. This might be of interest to the engineers in this group. This guy says after the Avero Arrow projectwas killed by a short sighted Conservative Govt, a NASA recruited came up and hired 25 Canadian engineers away to work down there. Why a big deal...there were only 27 people working on the space project at the time...so half of the pioneering staff were Canadians. From Wikipedia..... "Aftermath The cancellation immediately put over 50?000 people out of work at the Avro plant and outside suppliers. Within two months, all aircraft, engines, production tooling and technical data were ordered scrapped. This was partly in response to Royal Canadian Mounted Police fears that a Soviet "mole" had infiltrated Avro, later confirmed to some degree in the Mitrokhin archives[15]. Officially, the reason given for the destruction order from Cabinet and the Chiefs of Staff was to destroy classified and "secret" materials utilized in the Arrow/Iroquois programs.[16] Along with the five flying test models and production aircraft, blueprints and other materials were destroyed, leading to the creation of a piece of Canadian mythology. The rushed destruction incited a number of conspiracy theories alleging American culpability for the Arrow's demise. There remains an enduring but fanciful legend that one of the prototypes was spirited away after the cancellation and remains intact somewhere.[17] Following the Canadian government's cancellation of the Avro Arrow project in 1959, CF-105 Chief Aerodynamicist Jim Chamberlin led a team of 25 engineers to NASA's Space Task Group to become lead engineers, program managers, and heads of engineering in NASA's manned space programs-Projects Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. This team would eventually grow to 32 Avro engineers and technicians, and become emblematic of what many Canadians viewed as a "brain drain" to the U.S.. Many other engineers, including Jim Floyd (whose design studies at Hawker Siddeley (Avro Aircraft's UK parent) on the HSA.1000 supersonic transport design studies were ultimately influential in the design of the Concorde[18]) found work abroad in either the UK or the United States." |
