Last time I heard about black kids being denied use of a pool here in
Tallahassee was when I was a kid in 1966.

Reads as if the private swim club is in violation of the law. It should
be prosecuted.

As for Florida, if memory serves, it was still lynching blacks in the
1960s, right? And Mississippi, too.

I assume you can give a reference to such a lynching in the late 60s?
Wasn't there a rash of racial incidents in NJ, PA and NYC over black
kids being in "white" neighborhoods recently with the black kids being
beat up?

The fact is most racists do live up north now.
Ohio and Indiana are what Mississippi and Arkansas were in the 50s.

I just got back from Southern Maryland and they are as segregated as
any place I have ever seen.

Hmmm. I "frequent" Charles, St. Marys, and Calvert Counties, and no
overt segregation. The public schools are racially mixed, the county
employees are racially mixed, the housing areas are very diverse, and
there are at least several black-owned farms among the small number of
white-owned farms out where your relatives have that marina. In fact,
some of the oldest and most established families around here are black,
with histories that go back to the 18th century or earlier. I believe
Calvert and St. Marys Counties are about 15% black, and Charles is
somewhat higher.

I am not saying there are no problems. But when you say "segregated,"
to what are you referring?

There are "white" places and there are "black" places with very little
interaction between them. In Chuck county there are also barrios
springing up where latino gangs rule the neighborhood.
One of my nieces lives in Camp Springs and her neighbor was shot dead
for "dissing" a black guy. The PG cops are baffled since "nobody saw
nothing" and they are not really trying very hard to find much
themselves. They are resigned to the fact that he should not have been
on that corner. It was a gang corner. Too bad that was also a Metro
stop.

I see a multitude of skin colors and ethnicity in the neighborhoods we
go to to visit friends...white, black, asian, latino, whatever. If there
are "barrios" in Charles County, they are being set up by choice, not
because latinos are told to live there or only allowed to live there.

Camp Springs is not southern Maryland. I drive through PG County
frequently, and in fact, shop at a few stores there we don't have down
here. I see lots of faces of all colors there. PG County *is* the
country nearest the district to which many black families "emigrated"
when they could afford to leave DC.

Northern Virginia, btw, is plagued with gangs.

When a city is 75% Black, with 20% white, it is a segregated city. I
appears that the racist people in Maryland had to leave town when a few
blacks moved into their city.

That is pretty much true. I remember terms like "block busting" (a
black person moving in) and "white flight". My father was very liberal
and never moved far enough to ever make a profit on his house. We
always left when crime drove us out, not just the first few black
families.
One thing I have that Obama doesn't is, I was raised by a black woman.
She was a neighbor who was my "day care" for about 10 years.

Reggie, as usual, is full of ****. I'm not sure what the phrase "the
racist people in Maryland had to leave town when a few blacks moved into
their city" means. That's non-nonsensical. What city? There are no
substantially sized cities south of Annapolis, and even Annapolis is
small time, as cities go.

PeeGee County has been the "escape from DC" county for blacks for many,
many decades, probably more than 50 years. It has had a majority black
population as a result for a long, long time, though I think it is about
60% black. In the early 1980s, the percentage was lower, though.

Some of our friends in this neighborhood were a black family, but they
thought it was "too rural" around here for their taste, so they moved
"upstate" to one of the Annapolis 'burbs. The husband was a senior
officer with the Capitol police, and the wife was a muckety-muck with
the USPS. They had moved here from PeeGee county. Had Reggie moved in
next to them, they probably would have left the state.
