The only "pitchman" on TV I ever liked was (and is) Ron Popeil, mainly because he really understands how to use the medium to demonstrate products. I can't stand the Progressive Insurance commericials, and that obnoxious "pitch lady," but I do like GEICO's gecko. |

And all the other products, some good, some silly, some surreal? The one that scares me is that countertop chicken cooker. It has to get hot as hades on the outside as well as the inside, and it must be a pain in the ass to clean, too. I love the cheap knives commerical...there's enough quality there to slice cleanly through at least one tomato. |

Speaking of Popeil, reminds me of a fishing rod I bought, and even used a few times. No, not the pocket fisherman. Can't remember where I bought it. Might have been Cabelas or a now defunct outfitter. Late '60's or early '70's. Maybe Finnysports. I wanted something that would fit in a small tacklebox I always carried in my car trunk. It had a cork-wrapped butt, but was otherwise all metal. Don't know what metal, but it looked like a copper alloy. Never showed corrosion beyond tarnishing, but I never had it near salt. It was telescoping, collapsed to about 14-16" and extended to about 5 1/2' Wasn't cheap, but I wanted it. Always collapsed and extended well, but didn't feel right as it was too stiff and had very bad balance. Don't know what a big fish would have done to it, and I don't recall ever catching anything with it. Don't know where it went. I wouldn't have thrown it away. Funny how you had stuff and then remember it, but don't know what happened to it. First time I thought about that thing in decades. I can't stand the Progressive Insurance commericials, and that obnoxious "pitch lady," but I do like GEICO's gecko. That bimbo talked cute the first time I heard her. First time was enough I guess. Downhill from there. I flip the channel when I see her now. --Vic |

I do sometimes bring along a two piece "ugly stick" spinning rod I've had for many years. It's got a little case and goes "carry-on." I pack a small spinning reel and gear in my checked luggage. For a really portable rig, it's not bad. |

The thought passed through my mind. Whenever he came on I would instantly jack up the TV volume about 7 notches. So even if my wife was in the kitchen she'd know when he was on. Didn't tell her what I was doing. She was on the phone talking to her mom when I interrupted her and told her Billy Mays had died. She said "Good!" But she later said she didn't mean that. --Vic |
