Senate apologize for the wrongs of slavery

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Senate on Thursday passed a resolution
apologizing to African-Americans for the wrongs of slavery.

The nonbinding resolution sponsored by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, is
similar to a House resolution adopted last year that acknowledged the
wrongs of slavery but offered no reparations. The House will have to
vote on the issue again because the composition of that chamber changed
after last November's elections.

The resolution was approved on a voice vote.

Because it is nonbinding, it does not have to be forwarded to the
president for his signature.

Several states have passed similar resolutions, but the House resolution
was the first time a branch of the federal government did so.

Harkin's resolution "acknowledges the fundamental injustice, cruelty,
brutality and inhumanity of slavery, and Jim Crow laws," and "apologizes
to African-Americans on behalf of the people of the United States for
the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under
slavery and Jim Crow laws."

Jim Crow laws were state and local laws enacted mostly in U.S. Southern
and border states between the 1870s and 1965 that denied
African-Americans the right to vote and other civil liberties, as well
as legally segregated them from whites.

Some members of the African-American community have called on lawmakers
to give cash payments or other financial benefits to descendants of
slaves as compensation for the suffering caused by slavery.

While this is a symbolic gesture, maybe it will be meaningful to some.
The real apology for slavery is equal opportunity regardless of race,
creed, sex or national origin. I think MLK Jr. said it best when he
said " I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in
a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by
the content of their character. "

Race relations in the US is not perfect, but we have some a long way.

Actually only 24% of NC owned slaves. How about reparations for my family.

How many people alive now, were slaves in the South? How much has it

Slavery and its aftermath had an impact on blacks for generations, and
prevented most from even beginning to attain middle-class-dom until a

A large percentage of the people alive today have had ancestors who were
significantly affected by slavery. Most families with ancestor from
France, Germany, British Islands, and the Middle East have been in
populations defeated by foreign armies. Many times these armies saw the
defeated populations as spoils of war and sold the people into slavery.

There are many books about the practice of slavery during these time
periods. Additionally there have been many movies about slaves from
these time periods; Spartacus, Gladiator, and Ben Hur are a few.

The point being that everyone has ancestors who had the experience of
being slaves or having relatives carried off as slaves. They did not
see themselves as victims, but stood up and corrected the situation
using the experience to develop better families, communities, and
governments.

Beat & simplest thing to do...the US govt should confiscate all property &

What happens after that would be soley based on the ambition,

While this is a symbolic gesture, maybe it will be meaningful to some.
The real apology for slavery is equal opportunity regardless of race,
creed, sex or national origin. *I think MLK Jr. said it best when he
said " I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in
a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by
the content of their character. "

Race relations in the US is not perfect, but we have some a long way..

I wonder if Harry knows that there were Black slave owners also.

Gee, Bilious, what percentage of slave owners in the USA were black?
And why would you think I would want any different treatment for them?

Actually only 24% of NC owned slaves. *How about reparations for my family.
My great grandfather walked with a limp from a Confederate bullet wound..
How many people alive now, were slaves in the South? *How much has it
impacted them? *My Great grandfather was Irish immigrant. *Seemed like they
had some discrimination also.

Slavery and its aftermath had an impact on blacks for generations, and
prevented most from even beginning to attain middle-class-dom until a
couple of decades ago.

Did your great grandfather come here in chains?

Is that the criteria? Because many, many slaves weren't EVER in
chains. So they wouldn't get any of the money?
