Default Car cloning

Almost two months ago I bought a CPO Audi A6 from the local dealer,
and recently had been wondering why I hadn’t received my
registration. I got a phone call this morning from an investigator at
the DMV asking to come out and inspect my car.

The guy comes to look, and we matched up the dash VIN with the ones on
the firewall and in the door jamb. It turns out that my vehicle’s VIN
was used to get a title for another car, so I have the original and
someone else has the clone.

Called the dealer, and they told me that when they tried to register
mine, the DMV confiscated the title and wouldn’t let them, saying that
their title was invalid because it had been re-issued, apparently to
the previous owner. They had been fighting this thing for 4 weeks.
They have filed charges against the previous owner and SLED (South
Carolina Law Enforcement Division) is also involved.

The FBI website has some good info on car cloning. If you’re
unfortunate enough to end up with a clone, it will be confiscated and
you’ll be left without the car or your money… a real mess. I’ve heard
of this being done to classic cars to increase their pedigree and
worth, but not to late model cars. Thieves use this to “clean up” a
stolen car, allowing it to be registered in another state and sold.
Supposedly there will be a nationwide database implemented by next
year that all states will use as a clearing house to stop this
practice.

It's incredible how resourceful thieves can be. In this state (MA) you
used to be able to buy or sell a car that was 10 or more years old with just
a bill of sale. No title was required.
Now you must have a title for anything that you purchase, in state or out of
state in order to get a registration. I bought a '69 Charger from a museum
in Florida and the registration was held up because of a typo in the
paperwork. We had to go back to Detroit to get the original information,
then have a local town cop come over to my house and verify the VIN.

I had fun with the little LoadRight 'bandit' boat trailer Tom sold me.
(value approx $600.00)
Before I could even enter Canada, I had to pay a $206.00 fee (same as I'd
pay for a Cadillac from the US), then they wanted 7% GST at the same time.
Next I had to have it inspected at an official 'inspection station' to see
if it met Canadian standards. (big time nightmare)
After that at registration, they wanted the title...whick Connecticut
doesn't issue for small trailers.
Finally got that cleared up and the province wanted the $40.00 yearly
registration fee plus the 6% of value share they get from out HST tax (GST +
PST).
Next time I'll buy a new trailer here and go down just for the boat & motor.

With valuable old classics like your Charger, there is a lot of
cloning going on. I'll bet the state is looking very closely at those
types of cars, and your typo was a flag that it needed to be looked at
even closer. Good that you got it straightened out.
