I have friends that want to boat from Savanna, IL, to Minneapolis, MN, on the
Mississippi River in the next couple of weeks. Does anyone know of a sight
that lists the motels that are located on the river with docks? Thanks so
much,
Vonnie

(posted and mailed)

I have been on virtually every mile of the channel from Lock and Dam #9
north of Harper's Ferry to just above #11 at Dubuque and also from
Dubuque down to Bellevue at Lock and Dam #12 and several miles below.

The only motel I can think of is the Holiday Shores at McGregor (used to be
called the Bell Motel years ago). There is public dock there and a
Marina. Just a little farther north is Marquette and the river boat. There is
motel there also and even though it is not directly on the river, it is close.
You can rent "boatels" (houseboats) at McGregor but if you are already
on a boat. . . . . . . .

Guttenburg and Bellevue are right on the river and there would motels
there but they would located away from the river. At Harper's Ferry there is
a motel called The Pines located about 300 yards or so from the river.
The problem here is that channel bends over to the Wisconsin side 5 or 6
miles below Harper's Ferry (IA).

I do believe there are a few bed and breakfast places. . . one at Clayton IA
I think and probably at Cassville WI but I am not positive. There might be
something in the harbor at East Dubuque (where the Silver Eagle used to
tie up) but I am not sure about that either. Dubuque hasn't got anything
right on the river.

I have driven Hiway 35 from Prairie Du Chein to Lacrosse which follows the
river and there a lot of small towns but I can't recall any Motels along the river.
Might be bed and breakfasts there though.

Right now the river is about as low as I have ever seen it. . . .some wing dams
were sticking out of the water below the dam at Guttenburg last Sunday. Many
sand beaches are exposed and being used for camping. . . that might be the
best bet. Its a thought. Good Luck, Ron.

I don't know of any guides but their are plenty of marina's along the way.
Be careful as the water level is very low and the wing dams are dangerous
and often unmarked. Pay particular attention around mile 732 above lock 5A.
There is a curve in the channel that is not very well marked by buoys and a
57' Grand Harbour in route to Minneapolis recently went over the top of a
wing dam and nearly sunk their boat.
