I didn't know those things could float?

I wonder who got chewed on for losing live gear?

But then again, I always thought that they did train with live
ordinance for weight, but they weren't armed. either way it's not a
good situation

The father of one of the members of my fishing club ran a big dragger
out of Point Judith during WWII. He tells the story of his Dad
running out one evening to run the beach from there to Westerly for
flounder. It was getting dark and making his final pass back towards
Pt. Judith about a mile out when he heard a thud - looked around,
didn't see anything and continued his run.

Pull in the dragline, boards come on board, net comes onboard and
there's this shiny thing in it - a torpedo.

It wasn't one of ours either. :)

Started the hunt for a German sub - according to the story, it might
have been the one they sunk off Newport South Beach two days later.

Couple years ago at most. Last year I think. They found a live torpedo
under the Piller Point fuel dock.

Great place to find a torpedo.

And could have been a really old Sidewinder. I made shipping crates for
them in my teen years at a pallet company I worked for summers. And that is
51 years ago.

Little known factoid.

The scientist who designed and solved the glass fusing problem on the
Sidewinder heat/infrared sensor lived here in Woodstock. Mrs. Wave and
I bought the little house from his estate.

I didn't realize this until I started reading about it, but there was
a LOT of enemy activity near our beaches during WW2.

German subs torpedoed US ships virtually within sight of the coast. My
parents said the beach at Ocean city had oil in the water or traces
if it in the sand. There are even stories of U-boats in the bay.

My Mom was a WAVE during WWII and was a PO at the Coast Guard radio
station on Cape Cod. She and her best friend used to walk the beach
at night - according to her it wasn't unusual to watch Navy and CG
ships chasing subs in the distance - say a mile or two off shore.

That's not what a fisherman wants to see land on deck!
There's a really good non-fiction book called "Torpedo Junction" about the
German submarine attacks against North American shipping from Canada to
Louisiana.
