Few rules apply and the objective should always be to beat the crap out of the enemy until there is nothing left to fight. We learned that in Korea and Vietnam, but still think we can fight half hearted "wars". It's impossible. Right, wrong or otherwise the "war" part of our involvement in Iraq was accomplished swiftly and completely. Same thing with the initial crushing of the Taliban in Afghanistan.
