If you'll look at the posts made in the past hour, you'll get an idea
of what I meant in my comment to you yesterday.

As a kid I rescued a crow that had fallen or been kicked out of its
nest. Raised it in the house on food scraps and stuff. Finally got the
thing to fly by give it a toss in the front yard over and over. The
bird would go do its 'crow thing', but would come when I yelled its
name, 'Blackie'. (Yeah, not original, but I was only about seven.)

One winter evening it didn't come land on my arm when I called its
name. The next morning I awoke and found him frozen at the back door.

Sad day.

Yeah, I think they're smart as hell. They definitely know when a kid
is walking around with a .22 rifle in his hand!
