Just what did the country do when moving west ? Build a road
to the river and build a town to support forging and going across
the river. At least that is going into a useful place.

One was built in El Paso when I was a kid and it went 90 miles
out into the desert. To prove it was ok the libs built a county
High School 20 miles from anyone. By the time the town got there
the school was old. And only kick outs and live outside of town
types went there....

All of the major shoals in the Chattahoochee around here are named and
usually were small towns before Atlanta really spread out, because it
was an easy place to cross the river.
