thought was non-magnetic stainless - apparently not because I just
looked at my HO this afternoon and cotter pin for the prop is rusted
to hell and gone. I replaced both around the same time with the same
type cotter pin.

I will spare the insults but as a "retired" mechanic I can tell you
that the rule when it comes to cotterpins is they should be replaced
every time they are removed... Metal fatigue and all that. Just a
note, they should not be bent all the way over either, it is best to
just use the correct length. Some folks wrap them all the way around
the shaft, and that parts guy should not be pinching on such
things... Just carry a few new ones and discard them each time you
have to straighten them out...

I was a little concerned because the pins came from the same package.

Wouldn't want you cruising around Halifax Harbor and have the prop

Read the book. Mine says replace when straightened for removal.
