Madison: State capitol, large university, educated population, some high tech industries, job opportunity, nice old buildings. Tallahassee: State capitol, 2 large universities, educated population, NO high tech industries, very few job opportunities, all the old buildings have been razed. Now, I am a 5 generation native N. Florida redneck so I am inclined to defend my culture but even I see a problem here. Looking over the UW campus, I saw a 12 story bldg dedicated to licensing technologies developed at UW, FSU might have a cubicle dedicated to the same. I believe it is the cold climate. Bad weather keeps people in doors and they are more industrious. When I took a sabbatical years ago with the family in a motorhome, we stayed at Turtle Creek Campground near Madison. they even stay inside in nice weather. All the bug zappers by the campers and only thing they are zapping are lightning bugs, and nobody but us is outside. OTOH, yankees are usually kinda dull people, sure they are industrious and they do well but "YAWN". Southerners have real craziness in their culture and it sure makes life interesting. Compare yank writers and southern writers and you get the impression the yanks rarely venture beyond their comfort zone. Sure stereotypes make southerners look like uneducated morons but would anybody bother watching a show about hijinks of people in Wisconsin like they do "Dukes of Hazzard". What the hell is "Dukes of Hazzard?" Wait......Bach? Catherine? --Vic I really only watched the show once and I bet Bach and the rest of those fools on that show never got within 1000 miles of Georgia. Hard to blame them for that. The few times I was in Georgia other than on the Atlantic coastline I didn't like it. But Savannah and the Golden Isles I like. These days, if I even have to fly into Atlanta to get somewhere else, I reroute so I can skip that airport entirely. I like parts of Florida and southern Louisiana and the coast of Georgia. The rest of the south...I don't like at all. When we drive I-95, I try to avoid stopping anywhere in South Carolina for anything. |
