Are you sure he's a good friend?

WD40 is a water displacer, not a long term lubricant or protector. Wrong
stuff for the application.
Learn about fogging oil and the process of using it.

I am. Thanks!

Startron.

Also, a good friend and auto mechanic suggested removing the plugs on the
outboard, spraying the cylinders with WD40, spinning the engine a couple

No WD40 - it's a solvent. For four strokes, fog the engine with
fogging oil.

Change the gear oil.

Or better yet, take it to your mechanic and have him/her do it.

Couple of hundred bucks and you don't have to worry about it.

Hey...do you read your damned email? Sent you an interesting list the
other day..

Sorry - must have missed it the first time.

Thanks for sending that along. Nothing I'm interested in though.

I used to put a bit of motor oil in the sparkplug holes of my old British

the fogging oil in the 2 cylinders.

Take you a couple of days of cranking to get the engine started in the
Spring? :)

Yep, I think that is exactly what YOU should do.

Everyone else should use the proper fogging oil that actually sticks
to surfaces for more than a few hours, and does some good. WD40 will
actually dilute and wash off any crankcase oil that remains on
surfaces, so it's worse than doing nothing.

Bet you didn't know Herring was a highly trained and edumacated combat
injuneer, thanks to the US Army. He's one of the reasons why we got our
asses kicked in Vietnam.

You are sick. You know it was a Democrat President and Congress that called
the shots. And didn't Ladybird own a large part of Sealand and Bell
Helicopters?

A big *NO* on the WD40. It was never designed to be more than a Water
Dispersant, which is does well. It is not a lubricant, though it is
marketed as such. It is roughly 2/3 solvent and 1/5 oil.... the
remaining 2/15 is propellant and god-knows-what.... (Works pretty good
as a starting fluid, though!)

Use this or the like for fogging:

Thanks Gene. I appreciate the reply. I wouldn't have used the WD40, but I
was surprised that an auto mechanic would suggest it. But then again, auto
mechanics probably don't do a lot of outboard winterizations. My friend
doesn't own a boat.

BTW, good article on ethanol.

How's that little boy of yours doing? Getting any 'free' trips?

Maybe you shouldn't comment about the wives, kids, or friends of others.

I don't think he will be doing that anymore. Give him a chance to play nice.
