Wiring PA horn output to standard horn?

I'd like to wire the PA horn output from a VHF to a trigger a
tradition non-PA horn. I would think that I could use a relay for
this but could use some guidance with respect to selecting and wiring
the right relay here.

Are you talking like a car horn or some kind of speaker.....??

If you want the radio to honk a horn or beeper when a signal breaks the
squelch, you need a cheap SCR (if you want it to latch) or a power
transistor, if you want it to beep with the noise and shut off when it
resquelches

Tell me more about what you're looking for. Non-PA horn doesn't say
much....

Check your hotmail for a message. I drew out a quicky circuit using
Xournal on my Nokia N800 internet tablet which converted it to a PDF and
sent it to nbix.

I think that's what you want...it latches the horn on until you press the
pushbutton to reset it.

There's notes printed at the bottom. You'll be pleased I didn't scribble
them...hee hee. My hand is shaky at 2AM....It's the ale.

Sorry-- to clarify-- I would like to use the foghorn function of the
vhf to trigger a traditional (read: non-speaker) 12v horn.

There is a bit of a challenge doing what you have defined.

The PA output of your VHF radio is an analog (voice) format intended to
drive a speaker. Either an AC or DC relay would respond to the audio peaks
but not provide a contact closure of much length so the horn would only have
erratic short beeps. A somewhat complex circuit could be developed, but in
my opinion this is not a practical application.
