AIS splitter
 

Smart Radio (Milltech Marine) offers an active splitter so you can use the
same antenna for both vhf and ais.
However, it seems expensive. So what is an active splitter? (Does it turn
flips to or just splits?) Why so expensive? Is there a substitute?

Probubly an RF Activated Antenna Switch with internal 1/4 Wave Stub
Grounding on both radio ports, if it is designed for full AIS
Transponder operation. Seems kind of a stupid idea, if it costs more
than a second antenna would cost. But hey, what ever blows youe skirt
up......

That translates to "it disconnects the AIS receiver when you key the mike on
the VHF, otherwise the AIS receiver would be very upset at the amount of power
it was fed".

True but there's also the issue of adding the wire and having the proper
place FOR that second antenna...

connect a 17 inch piece of wire to the AIS antenna port and you are done.

There are several approaches for this. But if you have a class A
DSC (that has separate antenna for DSC reception), a passive splitter
would work fine with the DSC (receiving) antenna and a AIS receiver.

If you can and will install the system yourself (only pay for material)
it is probably cheaper to get a separate antenna for your AIS.

But if someone is going to install it for you the extra antenna will
probably
be more costly than the filter, as the filter requires less work.
(others peoples time=big ???/$$$)

There is NO "Filter" that you can purchase, reasonably, that will allow
AIS, and DSC to share an antenna. There are connection schemes that
would allow for a, DSC Receive only, and an AIS Receive only, system
to share an antenna, with with a 3db loss in the passive coupler.
Both DSC and AIS are designed for Transponder Operation, where
information Packets are transmitted as well.

Very FEW folks, who read this newsgroup, are going to be able to afford
a Class A DSC System. Most folks would find the installation of another
VHF antenna much easyier to accomplish than just about any other idea.
