ARPA data
 
Does anyone know where I could get some sample output from an ARPA radar? Or
even a simulator that outputs over serial port?

I have a system that can take in AIS data, and I'd like to include ARPA input
as well if I can get some data to play with.

Dave,
Most of the radar manufacturers have data simulators,the dealers use
them in the showrooms to demo display units..... You might contact
Kongsberg/Simrad or Raytheon High Seas, or Foruno , they may be able
to refer you to a dealer near you, I've found Foruno and Simrad to be
easier to work with What kind of system do you have? Does it receive
AIS or just accept data from an AIS system? Just curious!

Ok, I'll have a hunt around & ask some of the local dealers.

What kind of system do you have? Does it receive
AIS or just accept data from an AIS system? Just curious!


We have written our own software to process the AIS data & display it on
MapInfo GIS based display. We get the data from the Chinese made AIS units
(http://www.yte.com.cn/) & also have some Nauticast AIS units.

The plan is to have ARPA input to our software as well so we can do overlays.
I'd just like to look at some ARPA samples to get an idea of the update rate
& amount of data as I'm not sure whether our system will be able to keep up
with it or not.

Thanks for the info,Dave, So you would use the ARPA for the target and
then use the AIS to give an actual identity to it? Sounds like that
would be a pretty handy feature as an overlay, I have only done
installs on tje Komgsberg and Simrad units myself and all were on
container or auto-transport ships, but I'm hearing more and more
interest in pleasure boat apps, Looks to be a strong market
developing... The last Elect. dealer I worked for had a number of
simulators similar to what you need, but they were for pleasure craft
type radar and did not incorporate any ARPA data, that is why I think
the High Seas divisions would be your best bet..

We have already been selling the system for about 7 years now. We only added
AIS capability about 1 year ago though, and ARPA is something new that the
latest client is looking for. In the past we have been using it mostly with
dedicated Inmarsat tracking systems as well as proprietary UHF tracking
systems.

However, it's not just a viewing package - it's a full Command & Control
package used mostly by oil companies to manage their crewboats, supply boats,
anchor-handling tugs, drilling rigs, etc. Recently the local Coast Guard has
just bought it, so we have been adding new features.

So, as you an imagine, it's not a cheap package - it's based on MapInfo
Professional 8.0 GIS, and a licence just for that is getting on for US$2000
before we even get to our software that integrates into it.

There is a freeware package around that can decode AIS signals from the cheap
(or expensive) AIS receivers (or transceivers) and display them on maps, if
that is all you are after. Or there is Ship Plotter
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/shipplotter/ for more info) which is cheap but
does a good job even without an AIS receiver - uses a normal radio receiver &
a PC sound card!

That's the plan I think, but personally I can see problems. Around here we
get a LOT of data. I was on a boat in Singapore a few weeks back & playing
with a stand-alone AIS (can't remember the brand) but it had a "radar"
display on it, and when you zoomed out to 24nm range it would just crash the
whole AIS box because there was too much data! I think at any one time in
Singapore there are 2000 to 3000 ships & it's a small island, so they are
probably all within AIS range!

So, just getting AIS into a PC display system reliably while trying to do
other things is a big task. Introducing ARPA is something the customer wants
to do mainly to highlight vessels that have ARPA returns but no AIS, as these
are the more worrying targets. I'm skeptical as to whether it will work on a
PC system in the real world though. If I can find some simulator or even
sample ARPA data I'd trying pushing it in & see what sort of throughput we
get before everything falls over.

I have a Furuno Navnet RADAR with the optional ARPA board. I believe
there is an option to transmit the ARPA sentences over the Navnet
interface to a secondary display. I'm pretty sure the ARPA sentences
are documented in either the user manual or installation manual, and
either should be online in PDF format on the Furuno web site.
