RS232 connection/multiplexer info

I have a log which is connected to the gyro by RS232 line (around 3
metres long). I want to take a tapping out of this line and give a
parallel feed to the computer 12 metres away. Can I do that?
Which is the cheapest wire for such a distance?

My second problem is that I need a GPS multiplexer. I dont think I can
get it in India. Is any circuit diagram scematic available whic I can
use for makin a simple 2in/1out multiplexer?
Also can I increase the number of serial ports on my computer for more
inputs?

Yes you can do that and you can use any type of twisted pair wire for that.

You cannot make a multiplexer with just some electronics. There sis always a
microprocessor with software involved to read, store and forward the NMEA
data.

Also can I increase the number of serial ports on my computer for more
inputs?

Take a look at our website: www.shipmodul.com for info about multiplexers.
We can also ship to India if needed.

Can you guys imagine someone from Raymarine or Furuno taking the time to
read a boater newsgroup like this and HELP someone out?

Way to go, Meindert!

But more or less coincidental. When at work, I'm either designing hardware
or software. Since this is very "intense" work (at least with me it is, I
really can get carried away, forget to take lunch etc. etc.), I take a break
every half hour or so, for a few minutes. I then scan a few newsgroups to
see if any interesting stuff is going on....

Depends. If I use priority mail, it'll cost 11 euro (appr. US$ 15) and takes
6-10 days. I could use DHL but that is much more expensive. For a precise
quote I need your exact address.

You can get PCI and ISA bus cards that will add serial ports to a PC.
Two port cards are common and generally cheap, then there are cards like
the Digi serial cards that added 8 ports per card. Those were very
common in use at ISPs or other places where multiple line dial-in access
was needed.

You can also add serial ports via PCMCIA adapters.

=========================================

You can also buy an external port multiplexer which combines 2 or 4
serial ports onto a single USB port.
