AM/FM, DVD, CD, TV-Tuner 12V Combo
 

Anyone have any experience with the newer "car radios" that are an
all-in-one AM/FM, DVD, CD, TV-Tuner, Remote Control, 12V Combo? You of
course provide your own monitor and speakers.

A guy out of Hong Kong sells them (no-name brand) on eBay for around $150 +
shipping. I think Pioneer makes them in the well over $500 category.

I'm trying to cut down clutter aboard, and one of these cheapies would be a
big help, IF IT WORKED. I don't expect audiophile or HDTV performance, but
if it's just junk I don't want to mess with it.

I suggest you consider the marine environment before spending a lot of money
on a non-marine piece of equipment. Most marine electronics are protected
from rust/corrosion and sometimes direct water contact. Non-marine
electronics may not last very long.....

99% of that difference can be taken care of with a screwdriver and a $5.00
spray can of Caig conformal coating.

What is "Caig conformal coating?". I think I may need some for my new MARINE
ICOM 802. I'd like to get the Icom designer out on a rough night in Bass
Strait. We had better waterproof connectors on automotive electronics
10years ago.

I would be surprised if the 803 was not already coated. Conformal coating
is a non-conducting waterproof coating for printed circuit boards that is
formulated to not effect electrical properties. Usually a silicone or
urethane. It is applied after the board is assembled to protect the solder
joints and components from harsh environments. Several compainies make an
after market conformal coating spray that is easy to apply. Tech Spray,
Chemtronics, MGChemical and CAIG are a few trade names. The down side is
that it makes board level repairs a real PITA as you have to strip the
coating before doing any testing or repair. There are some strippers but
they have to be used with care as they can disolve the whole board if you
are not carefull.
