Hello

due to problems with my companys mailserver i have not been able to
receive
the answers to my question. so ill ask it again

After having my boat stored for winter in a garage in northen of
sweden i palnned to have some fun and brought it out on a sunny day in
june.
guess how surprised i were when it just wouldnt start. when i checked
it for ignitopn i found out that there were no spark from the
sparkplugs.
After consultning with our local dealer he told me that the stator on
mercruisers are known to ba kind of an akillesheel for the engines. is
this true?
with a price of 4500 SEK (550 usd) its not something i want to replace
very often. Is there anywhere i can find parts like this but with
better prices??

Your 120hp is a Force outboard engine, simple and cheap. I just sold my
Sea Rayder F16XR2 with the Mercury 175hp V-6 outboard powerhead, here.
It's amazingly-expensive stator also failed after about 3 years. The soft
iron (read that RUSTING) core is all exposed at the ends where the flywheel
magnets go by it, causing the intense humidity and salt air to just corrode
the iron core all to hell. This allowed the core laminations to short out,
causing big eddy currents, instead of big power in the coils. The core
also SWELLED, putting a strain on the coils wrapped around it, shorting
some of them to the grounded core through their insulation.

The mechanic who replaced it replaced it with an aftermarket product that
is PAINTED with some kind of protective coating before the coils are
applied to the core. The ends of the core are not exposed iron to open
air. I never had any more problems and if you were stupid enough to reach
back there where the Thunderbolt Ignition coils were on the back of the
running engine, Mr Thunderbolt would bite your hand, painfully, to prove he
was in control of that part of the boat...OUCH!

I think I paid $US380 in South Carolina from an independent dealer for the
aftermarket coils for the V-6....just for price reference. That was in
2000, 4 years ago. The new coils looked just as new as installed before I
sold the boat.

On another subject, have you had all the recalls for that engine done by
your Mercury/Force dealer? I had two recalls related to the cheap plastic
pump and worm gears of the automatic oil injection on my V-6 and while I
was digging through the dealers list of factory recalls I noted quite a few
on the 90hp and 120hp Force Sport Jets. Check your dealer's files for
them.
