Default Battery

I have a Larson 186 SF. It has three batteries. One is a 24 volt
battery for carnking. The other two are Continental Super Stalker
deep cycle trolling batteries (T27-165). How do I tell if they are 24
volt or 12 volt? I need to charge them, I think they might be two 12
volt batteries in a 24 volt system but I am not sure so I need to know
if I can use my 12 volt charger on them? I have an adapter that plugs
into the outlet for the trolling motor to plug into that you connect
your charger to so that it charges both of those batteries but I do
not want to use the wrong charger.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Get yourself or beg/borrow (I don't advise steal) ... a voltmeter. Better
yet, get a knowledgeable person to check it out for you. Yes, could be you
have the 2 12V's connected in series to add up to 24V ... or not ... or
maybe they are connected in parallel for 12V (trolling motors can be 12 or
24 or more).

Are you absolutely certain your cranking battery is 24 volt? I don't
think I've heard of a 24 volt battery - if you want 24 volts, you
usually need two 12 volt batteries in series.

Also, I expect your engine started life as a car engine, and would
therefore have a 12 volt electrical system, as the vast majority of
smaller North American boats have.

If the battery says "Group 24" (or similar) on it, and is about 10.9 x
9.9 x 6.75 inches, it is the "traditional" size for a car battery, and
is 12 volts.

I suspect the T27-165 batteries are Group 27 12 volt batteries - they
should be about 12.75 inches long - about 2 inches longer than your
cranking battery. You should be able to use your 12 volt charger on
them, but if they are connected in series, you can only charge one at
a time, unless you rewire them to a parallel connection for charging.

To be really certain, you should get a voltmeter and measure the
battery voltage.
