autohelm 3000 motor

Does anyone know of a source for the electric motor in the autohelm
3000. I contacted raymarine and they no longer supply parts.

Raymarine had a 'recommended' cruising spares list which included the small
electric motor that is found in nearly all wheel and tiller pilots. Just
don't tell them it is a AutoHelm.. just let them think it is a ST model.

The motor is easy to change, but the waterproof wiring boss is difficult.

Thanks Steve I'll look it up.I am running the old belt system with the
newer 4000ST head. It works for me but could be a bit slow for others.

I have one of those units here and the back of the motor housing just
unscrews. The joint is right at the red strip. You may need a strap wrench.
I just tried to do it by hand and this one was too tight. However, the cone
portion of the housing unscrews and the wire coming out of the end of the
cone should start slipping.. If it doesn't, after a turn or two, try pushing
it into the cone until stops rotating with the cone.

Inside you will find the replaceable electric motor.. It is this motor that
is standard spare part for all of the old AH and ST wheel and tiller pilots.
Even the enclosed wheel drive units had the same motor (so I'm told).

If you do a gooble search of this NG or the rec.boats.cruising you my find a
few posts about this motor being a recommended cruising replacement.

I just found the spare motor part number listed in the Raymarine Autopilot
Customer Support page Q&A, keywords 'cruising spares' . Resulted with this
number N012 4000WD Motor Assembly..

(the link to this info is far too long to repost here but I will try anyway)

Steve
I have the unit apart , It is the spring on the brushes that failed. I
have an email in to our local distributer I'll post the outcome.

I contacted our local service people and it sounds to me as though the
"new" motors are the same, but the gear on the shaft will be different.
When I stripped the old one, the gear is just a push or shrink fit on
the shaft so changing it will be no problem.

Well as always it's not that simple. I have to go through a retailer who
in turn will contact the service people that I am talking to! I'll keep
you posted.
