How to get rid of boat odor

Standard boat odor. Not diesel, not bilge rot, etc. Just 25 years of
"stuff". No perfume or ozone answers need apply.

I use used coffee grounds in baggies. Works great. You can get them for free
from Starbuck$... Absorbs odor and moisture.

I like boat odour, as long as it is not diesel, rot, sewage, resin or
overheated electrical insulation.
I only regret that Stockholm tar is no longer part of it

Replacing all the cushions and mattresses with new did wonders, here. I
think there were "things" growing in the seat cushions from years at sea.

You can test it. Take off all these things and air out the boat very well
to get rid of the residuals. Close the boat up and see if it's appreciably
better days later. If so, new cushions...not just washed which doesn't
work.

I also think a lot could be done by simply WASHING all the bulkheads and
overheads with an anti-fungal soap and fresh water. Do you regularly wash
the wood? Wood grows algae, even painted. I think you're smelling algae
and fungus growing inside the swamp every boat always is. Wood's
pretty...plastic doesn't grow algae and fungus. It's a tradeoff.

(Behind those wooden panels, by the way, "something" is ALWAYS leaking from
the toerails....growing fungus/algae behind the panels as it rots away.

Take a look.

Among the best:

Keep in mind, though, that much of that old boat odor comes from mold and
fungi. Before you do anything else you must clean out every locker. Air out,
wash, wipe with bleach solution the contents and the surfaces. In places you
can't get to such as the inside surfaces of hull liners and the like you
might have to saw inspection ports that can be covered with teak or metal
grates so you can keep the inside surfaces free of mold and mildew.

Odorxit is great for odors that have seeped into surfaces. It even
neutralizes dog and cat **** and skunk spray which is some potent stuff.

Yes, PureAyre is an excellent product. It has some sort of enzymatic
action that actually removes the source of odors. It is a very good
idea to clean everything first however, otherwise the odors will
eventually return.

Mothballs. We scatter them all over the boat at layup time. By winter's
end they are gone and the boat smells sweet.

Whew... I guess, but for those who don't layup the boat, this won't work.

Take *everything* out. Investigate every crevice -- sometimes there's
something dead back there. Clean the interior thoroughly. Don't forget
in and behind the furniture. Check/replace head hoses and fittings.
Wash the cushions and covers. Add day-night vents.

Our interior wood was just oiled. Varnish got rid of a lot of mold &
mildew and really spiffed the interior up. I took what could be removed
home for the winter.

How to get rid of boat odor

We use our boat a lot - we've been on it in Mexico for the last 5
years - and spend 18 mos in Central America as well. Before that AK 3
times, NZ & Aust, Japan, etc. We are completely emptying the boat
after 21 years. Will wash thoroughly - hate to replace the foam on 6
berths and all the salon cushions. Will try the Pureayre and Odorxit.

Try a product called Consan Triple Action 20. It can be bought at
Lowes and even the grocery stores. It is an enzyme action. Does a
very good job with oders and is no toxic. Alos kills mold and
mildew. Google at Consan.

Beware, ozone attacks rubber so figure on replacing ALL hoses.

How to get rid of boat odor

After 20+ years the mold and fungi living on the UNDERSIDES of sole,
cabinetry; BEHIND all those closed spaces will qualify as an official
'mushroom farm'. Only way to rid it is to open it, scrub it and
leave some 'caustic' to prevent its reinfection.
Aspergellus, Stochybatris are common and harmful molds that THRIVE in
those spaces ... only way to rid them is to SCRUB them, etc. No
perfumes, no deodorants, no magic potions .... as if you dont REMOVE
them the dead cells only become nutrient sources for 'other' species.

Got soap? Got scrub brush?
