Minor point - it's Port Jefferson, not Fort. No fort there that I
remember. All those places along there - Cold Spring Harbor, Port
Washington, etc are just nice to be in. Port Jeff and Washington
interesting mix of old and new to come ashore and walk around in.

Port Jeff:

Go into town and walk around - nice old north shore community with
the usual tourist ammenities.

Land your dinghy near or in Mt Misery cove and climb the hill.

At high tide, take a dinghy ride up into the head of Conscience Bay.

Go ashore on the sand spits either side of the inlet. Go beach
combing, build a campfire, have a picnic. This is one of the few
places on Long Island where you can do all of that without a permit.

This sounds like a good overall plan. They charge $7 an hour to tie a
dinghy to the dock if you want to see the town. Other than that,
looking is free. There are steep hills immediately surrounding the
shorefront village. There are some really beautiful neighborhoods
hidden up in those hills. Lots of fancy old houses with lush gardens,
waterfalls, etc. We walk around up there occasionally. The village
itself is two different places depending on whether you are there
during the week or on a weekend.

Ya, me included.

So, how about Oyster Bay?? Weather today looks perfect for a run,
perhaps with spinnaker, to there, as we'll get out of here much
earlier than our usual.

I'll call the harbormaster just before we leave to get the real
skinny, but I have no interest in paying $7 an hour to tour the town,
and we don't need any more shore leave just to get off the boat. Last
night's finishing of the fish was marvelous; perhaps we'll catch more
on the way down...
