My 10 day Maine cruise starts this morning as soon as my guests arrive and,
hey look, the visibility is improving! http://home.maine.rr.com/rlma/Improving.jpg For those of you landbound and reduced to posting exaggerated accounts of improbable cruises under false names, I'll post my SPOT tracking page so that you can vicariously enjoy my travels via Google Earth. With this kind of visibility, you may see more of Maine than I do:) http://share.findmespot.com/shared/f...mdBduHqRUv Ak Last I spoke to Skip and Lydia, they were planning to head south again tomorrow after seeing about as much of Maine as in the picture. Signing off until my return. -- Roger Long |

To show how bad the weather, and boat business is :: a marina I spoke with yesterday had lowered their mooring use fee by 1/3 .. unheard of.. marina's lowering the cost? The same marina told me that most of their customers are taking the boats out by Labor Day,,, the reason is; they can't afford to use them. So.. for Captain Roger... nice quiet anchorages! Looks like some normal weather over the next few days.. |

Captain ... watch out for "ledges".. I've hit just two since 1970 so I'm cautiously optimistic about getting through the next ten days unscathed. Thanks for the thought. Should be better weather by next week. -- Roger Long |

Probably a night in the Thimble Islands tonight, and maybe Mattituck Inlet, or Port Jeff before we return on Sunday. |

I have ridden the jetski from here on the north shore of L.I. to check out the Thimble Islands a few times, very pretty. In Port Jeff there is a great circluar cove just east of the inlet, behind what's called Mt. Misery, it's a huge circular boating/party hangout. If you walk up the huge bluff at the northeast corner of the cove, well, that's Mt. Misery, from the top there's an awesome view of what feels like the whole Long Island Sound and of the cove itself. Even if you just walk up the smaller bluffs on the north edge of the cove there are nice views, and on the other side of those, a beautiful empty beach on the Sound. richforman up the smaller |

Last I spoke to Skip and Lydia, they were planning to head south again tomorrow after seeing about as much of Maine as in the picture. Well, the Chesapeake has been offering far better vistas all this season, with a few squalls at times, but not as bad as has been in past seasons. This season has had quite a few very localized storms, fewer fronts. They know where I "live". I hope they will contact me for a personalized cruising guide to the Upper Chesapeake. It's got some absolutely great spots that they haven't yet touched. Truth be told, though we're based in the upper Bay, they didn't hit some of our favorites in the lower Bay in their rush. The Chesapeake deserves a few months' concerted effort to explore. It'd take us about 6 months to revisit all our favorite past locations, and a month or so more to visit the places we were interested in, but were too far off of our chosen path. -- Jere Lull Xan-à-Deux -- Tanzer 28 #4 out of Tolchester, MD Xan's pages: http://web.mac.com/jerelull/iWeb/Xan/ Our BVI trips & tips: http://homepage.mac.com/jerelull/BVI/ |

Heading for Baltimore, just like the old steam boat days. The wind should be from the S-SW and the jenniker might see some play. No traking jizmo's. Single handing a 40' Van de Stadt ketch. Tom, Irishsailorman Look for Xan reversing your course in a bit over a week from now. We should be heading towards Sandy Point near/on the Wicomico for Labor Day weekend. Note that it's a naturist rendezvous, so people might not be wearing much as you approach. But clothing is optional; nudity isn't required. The Chesapeake Flotilla of the Nautical Naturists is a particularly accepting group of naturists. If you are in the northern Bay that weekend, there's another rendezvous at Still Pond. In either case, call out on 77 for the Chesapeake Flotilla and we'll guide you in. -- Jere Lull Xan-à-Deux -- Tanzer 28 #4 out of Tolchester, MD Xan's pages: http://web.mac.com/jerelull/iWeb/Xan/ Our BVI trips & tips: http://homepage.mac.com/jerelull/BVI/ |

Been all over Port Jeff many, many times. There's another nice anchorage west of that one. It leads to Conscience Bay, and a smaller fork leads to (of course), Little Bay. The bays are shallow, but the anchorages outside them have plenty of water. The small one is pretty narrow, however... |
