I am a Canadian. I checked with my airline. They gave me permission to carry a PDF and extra cartridge. I pack both in checked luggage. From the WestJet web site (http://www.channelgroup.org/wjpassen...-inflating.htm) : "Self-inflating life jackets with two small CO2 cylinders are permitted". -Approval of a WestJet agent is required. Check with your airline. Check the web site first. Aren't the "life jackets" the airlines supply operated by CO2
cartridges? Yes, but of course they have control over the inspection so they feel better about theirs than they do about yours. For more info about this as it applies to airlines in the US, go to: http://www.ussailing.org/safety/pfds_and_faa.htm |

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone has had any problems carrying a Sospender PFD which has a co2 cartridge as Carry ON or Checked Baggage on the plane??? 49 CFR - CHAPTER I - PART 175 § 175.10 Exceptions. (25) With approval of the aircraft operator, one small carbon dioxide cylinder fitted into a self-inflating life-jacket, plus one spare cartridge, may be carried by a passenger or crew member in checked or carry-on baggage. I've traveled with mine on American, which has a section on its Web site saying that it allows them, Northwest and Canadair. David |

Yes. I was told they are not allowed as carry on and not allowed as
checked baggage. Ironic as all over water planes have a co2 cartridge under every seat. Amish wrote: Hello all, I was wondering if anyone has had any problems carrying a Sospender PFD which has a co2 cartridge as Carry ON or Checked Baggage on the plane??? amish |

The airline at least has the option of inspecting their own CO2 cartridges and assuring that they do not represent a hazard. That cylinder that you might bring aboard will have been exposed to salt water, banged around and could be who knows how old. Rod |

If the goal of terrorism is to paralyze their victims with fear then we have
been beaten by our own stupid paranoia. Anyone who is not only too cowardly to defend their own person, but also too paranoid to allow pilots to carry guns deserve to die as slaves - period. The people who survived the building of America would be ashamed of what we have become! "Keith" wrote in message ... ...or be loaded with poison gas by a terrorist. I have also traveled on American Airlines to the USVI with SOSpender PFDs. I
removed the CO2 cartridge from the PFD and packed it along with a spare CO2 cartridge in a crush-proof box that I got at West Marine and got no hassle from American Airlines. The TSA did an extra scan of my luggage at SFO so I pointed it out to them -- I was prepared to leave my PFDs in my truck at the airport if they were going to reject them. The TSA said it is up to the airline, and the airline said it is ok. They made to the USVI with no problem -- I did find one of those "we opened your bag" notices in my luggage, but the cartridges were intact. On the return trip, again, no hassle from St. Thomas and they got home just fine.
