Live charts, we''re getting closer....
Maemo Mapper is a freeware, open source mapping program for the Nokia
N800/810 Linux Internet tablets. On my N800, a bluetooth GPS Nokia makes is a serious, twelve channel, WAAS enabled and VERY sensitive GPS little box about the size of a matchbook. It will place your car in the exact parking space it occupies on a Virtual Earth composite satellite photo/street map overlay. Now, the Linux hacker geniuses have modified Maemo Mapper to read the up to date Aeronautical chart mosaics available from runwayfinder.com's servers. Maemo mapper will either download these mosaic tiles on the fly, or you can store them before you trip and use them with the tablet offline, not connected via bluetooth through your cellphone data subscription. It is only a matter of time before these Linux geniuses find a server for nautical chart tiles and give us realtime, instant charting...in spite of the NMEA people who don't want you to have it without paying them for government data...... The aeronautical charts work first class....very nice. Maemo mapper is from: http://www.maemo.org/ where all our open source software is reposited thanks to Nokia. More information from tablet users is available on the forums on: http://www.internettablettalk.com/ GPS charting, live weather via cellphone or satphone data, email, Skype worldwide phone service, Gizmo messaging and phone service, full featured web browser with javascript/Flash/Realplayer/etc. support is about $239 for the tablet and $100 for the GPS box.... Now we'll need a bluetooth autopilot! Stick around...it'll happen. |
