This morning on Norwegian TV they have shown the most stupid action by a
yacht skipper I have ever seen.
The world's largest cruise line has been in Oslo and was under way in the
channel going back out, with the city still in sight behind.
A large sailing yacht, about 40' I would guess, under power with no sails
set, motored right across its bows at a distance that looked about 100/200
yards at most. There were four people on deck who seemed quite unconcerned.
They would have been quite invisible from the bridge of the ship.
The Harbour Master has been on TV talking about the incident and I do not
know what further action will result.
Perhaps they thought that they had right of way since the ship was coming
from their port side!
I really hope someone gets it onto You Tube.

I don't understand your concerns here. The yacht cleared the ship so
apparently there was sufficient room for its passage.

That reminds me of the signs on trucks that read "If you can't see my
mirrors, I can't see you!"

Well, actually, I don't give a rats arse whether you can or you can't - as
long as I watch what you're doing, I'm not going to hit you because I can
manouevre better than you can.

That's pretty dumb all right. It tells me though that the standard of
seamanship must be a lot higher there in Norway (which I would fully
expect) if that is the dumbest thing you ever saw.

This was a sailing yacht. Don't get me started on the antics of power
boats...

But suppose the yacht had had some kind of engine failure or other
problem!

I recently saw a ca. 28' power boat happily zooming along right ahead
and in the path of a loaded containership riding the tide down the
Delaware river, and totally ignoring the pleas of the ship's pilot to
"pick one side or the other". OK, as long as everything works.

Yep... same thing I tell my students when they ask why we're getting out of
the way long before the bigun gets near... if something breaks, you don't
want to be here.

Not sailing -based but a similar situation which I witnessed (and stuck
in my mind ever since):

An Austin Montego in front of me pulled into the slip lane to turn right
(UK) and, rather than stop and wait for this lorry to pass, tried to
cross in front of it. Stalled.

The (girl) passenger was killed outright and I held the head of the
driver while he died.

The lorry driver was crying at the side of the road.

All to save a minute.
