depth sounder problems

I have a B&G network depth sounder that has failed me.
Doing a normal search on WM, defender, etc and google search and
I have yet to find anybody in the US that carries the dam thing. I was
just going to order a new one and then send off the unit to get
repair.

So,
A. anybody know a online dealers of B&G in usa
B. whats my chances of finding another more popular unit (say
raymarine) that will drop in replacement, ie know new holes for
transducer/display?
thx, Tom

No joy, appears both transducer (airmar) and display unit are out
of production...

There are a few breakers around, but you may be in for a new system.
Nothing lasts forever.

Years ago we bought a used Honda Civic. After a few years we needed some
parts only to be told by the Honda dealer that it only stocks parts for
Civics less than 5 years old.

I had all B&G stuff on my boat. Never again.

I recently ordered a part for my B&G wind speed indicator. $140 for a
$10 part. The outfit was down in Florida and was listed online as a
B&G repair facility. I hate it when they can squeeze gonads like
that.

B&G were all the rage when I started sailing in the early sixties. It was at
that time the best electronic equipment by far, on boats of all kinds.

Surely you can't be still using their gear in the US?

Dennis.

It is standard equipment on Pacific Seacrafts as late as
2005...probably
because they bought it in bulk. I'm going to try to find a drop in
replacement
otherwise this is going to get expensive: haulout, fiberglass work to
change
hole for transducer, etc....#$%#$

I have an old unused thru hull transducer in my hull. Right next to it is
a new one just glued to the inside of the fiberglass and it works great.

See first picture on this page:

http://home.maine.rr.com/rlma/Strider0604.htm

I have taking out the old one and fiberglassing up the hole on my
"someday" list but may never get around to it. It's a theoretical weak
point if a floating object should hit that exact spot but anything at that
point is likely to be sliding along the hull. I would have to be pitching
just right on to something sharp and hard to punch that old transducer
through.

Yes, but that would be a problem whether it was working or not.
Anyway, something that would do that would surely make a hole in your hull
anyway.
There are probably thousands of thruhull transducers in use and I have never
heard of one being punched out

They get punched out by lightning strikes once in a while, as do
knotmeter transducers.

Roger just doesn't want to be the first.

He wasn't - and I doubt I was, but - I had the only water intrusion on
my wreck from a punched-off mushroom on a depth sounder transducer,
allowing water to seep up the now-opened core.

It was plastic; perhaps a bronze one would have survived the
pounding. In any event, my normal bilge pumps cycled comfortably
during the several-hour tow back to the repair joint, so not much
water was able to get between the core and the hull-hole.

So, there's one which was defective, later, in that same hole (I had a
replacement), and one which is an inside, shoot-through-the-hull
mounted next to it.

If I ever have the same wreck, I'll have the same potential for water
intrusion :{)) - but I'll still have a functioning sounder from the
inside!
