Shipping my boat? ( Ancient City Marine Transport? )
 

G'day,

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone has any comments to make about a
company called "Ancient City Marine Transport". I'm about to hire
them to move my J/24 out to wisconsin. This is the first time I've
had someone move my boat, so does anyone have any suggestions of
things to watch out for and things to do.

Matt,

If you have a J-24 and no trailer, consider buying a trailer now.
In Wisconsin, you will need a cradle to store the boat anyway.
J-24s aren't that all that heavy. If you have one, you will probably
want to take it other places for events anyway. If you join any one of
the clubs there with a hoist, you may want to dry-sail and if you do the
club will probably require you to have a trailer.

If you have a J-24 and no trailer, consider buying a trailer now.

I've got a trailer. It's just that by the time I take time off of
work, fly back to NJ, and rent a vehicle I've had no luck finding a
way to pull that off for less than the moving companies want ( $1.3K
). The big problem is finding a rental vehicle to move the boat.
Budget, Hertz, Avis, Thrify, Alamo, you name it they rent SUV's and
trucks but sorry you can't tow a boat with our vehicles. The only
luck I had was U-HAUL for $1.1K which blew the move-it-yourself idea
out of the water. Any ideas?

As for Ancient City, I decided against using them. They have a nice
website ( although the title on their website calls them a 'coat'
transportation company instead of a boat transport company ) but they
aren't in the florida phone book and the buisness address traces to a
residental mobile home park. I decided the $300 difference between
them and a larger company was worth having a company you could track
down in a hurry.

If you have a trailer, you have two very good options available.

Assuring you don't have a friend with a pickup that could be talked into
a road trip.

Find a company (not boat spacialist) in the area of either end that has
a flat bed, ask them what they might charge for the run. If you run the
trailer up, take the tires off and strap the rig down it will ride just
fine.

Or

Find a mid-west trailer (start in Elkhart) or boat company that is
already delivering to NJ. These things are usually hauled on lowboy
light duty trailers, and you could probably make a "back haul" deal with
them that gets you five or six states closer than you are now.

In any case tell any body you are talking to that the beam is 8.5ft
(they don't need permits anywhere) and don't worry about it because it
is almost impossible for a normal human to measure.

Last spring a boat mover charged a friend 1.8k$ to move a J-33 to
Detroit area from NW OK - just for reference - the boat hauler did a
great job and he had to get the wide load permits for about eight
states. That was 11 foot beam, can't slip it by when it hangs over both
sides of the trailer by 1-1/2 feet.
