Garmin 45 software update ?

Hello,

Due to low batteries , my GPS has lost all its datas ... and also it
seems the 1999 software update ( EOW rollover story) , and so it
cannot acquire any satellite anymore. Anybody's got an idea where I
could get the software or any other idea ?
(Garmin has given up with the 45 - no support - no update)

Thanks
Friendly

That's odd. Garmin still has the latest update for my old GPS12CX
(latest update 3/24/99) on their download page. I think the G45 was
about the same vintage.

Sorry, can't help.

Anyhow, there's an FAQ he
http://vancouver-webpages.com/peter/g45faq.txt

And you can download the manual he

And if you don't get an answer here, you might try asking over on

Garmin makes SURE their old GPS units will sell new units by making as many
things proprietary as possible so noone ELSE can manufacture chart plugs,
for instance, or update the software/charts stored in them.

This insures a constant steady revenue stream for Garmin as users are
forced to replace perfectly-good-and-functional units, like my Garmin 185
chart plotter/sonar chart unit, with new units at amazing prices...using
yet another proprietary, totally different, chart plug that will, in a
couple of years, be, yet again, unobtanium and impossible to update, a
recurring cycle.

Boaters and GPS buffs never seem to catch on to this scam, ensuring Garmin
a revenue stream far into the future.....

There's no support for the nice 185 chartplotter/sonar units, either. I
paid $12 for mine in a thrift shop in perfect condition, but missing the
sonar transducer and GPS antenna (which I found on Ebay cheap, too).

You need a new GPS.....one that doesn't say Garmin on it would be prudent.

Well maybe... but those Garmin 45 units have to be at least 10 years old.
That's a long time in the life of an electronics gadget.
Where's the cell phone you had in 1997?

Garmin's early receivers like the 45 (and pre-version 3.5 12XLs) were
not field-upgradable.

I think the OP's 45 should, given time, fresh batteries, and a clear
view of the sky, recover. (although I had an old Garmin 128 on my
boat that can no longer find satellites - don't know if the problem is
antenna or receiver, but it did work last fall...)

Mine still works like a champ.

OH! Upon reflection, I remember that I sometimes have to unscrew the
antenna and clean the connection to get a good "read". The slight
corrosion also causes it to lose the satellites on a cloudy day or
below decks. That could be the original poster's problem.

I remember the Garmin 75 that came with the mirage 33 i used to crew on. We
had the original receipt from when the Po bought it. he paid around $1K
and the thing still worked perfectly... but now everyone wants a mapping
GPS.
I purchased my GPSMAP 60Cx in the fall for $379.00 less the $50. rebate and
it's fun to use with the Blue Chart and TOPO maps for my area.

If the unit switches on and goes to the satellite page, but will not pick up
any satellites, it has probably "lost" the almanac from memory.

The successor to the 45, the 48, can be restored to full use by plugging
into a 12-volt supply, via the four-way plug at the back, switching it on,
and leaving for 24 hours or longer. This restores the internal 12-volt
battery and the memory.

I had a 48 which had given up the ghost, and I tried this about 4 years ago,
The unit has worked perfectly ever since. I do not know whether the 45 has
the same electronics but they are very similar in appearance so it's worth a
try.

It helps when you do finally have the unit in "searching the sky" mode if
you manually set the approximate location, lat. and long., and the local
time, as this speeds up the search considerably. You will need a power lead
for the 4-way plug preferably with a cigar-lighter plug at the other end, so
that you can leave it in the car overnight for instance.

These leads can be bought from Pfranc (Google for this).

Dennis.

I had a Garmin with a round rubber socket with 4 holes in it that plugged
into the unit. After a couple of years, it simply DISINTEGRATED! This was
caused by the humidity causing this rubber to LEAK between the +12V battery
pin and the ground pin INSIDE THE RUBBER! It simply turned to powder....

Now THAT's real planned obsolescence!

Thank you for your answer., Peter; But I remember in 1999 downloading
an update through the internet to correct the rollover problem and
loading it through the serial input. Maybe it was just a parameter in
RAM. It seems to have lost this one.
