Boat insurance for Mexican waters?
 

Looks like I may be buying a US documented boat in Mexican waters.
It's way down south. Any idea how to buy basic liability insurance,
like if I sideswipe someone else's boat or something? Do you have to
have a survey? Thanks as always.

Mexico requires all watercraft entering ports in Mexico to carry third
party "on the water" Mexican boat insurance liability coverage issued
by an authorized, admitted Mexican insurer. In the event of an
accident, if you do not carry authorized admitted liability coverage
then the vessel could be confiscated.
Mexican Watercraft Insurance offers extensive liability coverage.
The ACE Seguros Mexican boat insurance policy includes Legal Aid and
Bail Bond coverage.

No you do not need a survey for liability coverage.

While there they never asked for proof of liability, just
documentation, passports, and go pay 50 dollars for a customs sticker
or Operado Por Banjercite - Modulo Puerto Juarez. BTW they do not take
peso's for the sticker.

While in Mexican water we were never inspected, or stopped by anyone.
Infact a French fellow who skippered a boat advised us to just do what
we needed to do and not bother checking in. He did not and had been
there a few mo. I wish I took his advice as the checking in and out is
a major PITA. The only person who asked if we had any weapons aboard
was the marina manager. The only Mexican offical that came aboard was
the immigrations officer, and as soon as my brother spilled a cup of
coffee on him in the wheelhouse he moved our meeting to the marina
office.

We also sailed in Mexican waters between Cozumel and Xcaret and the
Banco Burrito and the mainland south of there....never saw any Mexican
navy crafts, just 100's of fishermen 1 in a 100 had proper running
lights. Amazed at some fishermen offshore 30 miles standing high in a
15 ft double ended dory with 12 ft oars rowing in 9 ft seas working
gill nets I assumed, or some sort of purse net, or long line with a
mother boat.

Interesting... we were boarded by the Mexican Navy... they didn't speak
English, we didn't speak much Spanish, but it was amicable. They were only
interested in looking at our fishing permits. Apparently, poaching in the
Sea of Cortez is common.
