Four days on a mega yacht
 

Well, that was interesting. Lots of polished metal, hand rubbed varnish on
exotic woods, acres of teak deck. Nothing for me to fix here. The whole
d%^*ed thing was computerized! Big screen TVs in the staterooms that got a
more channels than I get at home and could link to the ship's systems to
display everything from the GPS charts to the EGT. I wouldn't be suppressed
if the heads monitored what I had for dinner the night before. Talk about
feeling useless, I couldn't even keep my wine glass empty.

The upper decks were nice but the engine room was a thing of beauty and a
wonder to behold. A pair of V20 MTU 4000s surrounded by enough pumps,
gensets, A/C compressors and water makers to keep a small city running. I
could retire on what one of those exhaust elbows cost. Even a full machine
shop that opened up to the "dinghy" hanger.

The down side was that we didn't up anchor but once and smoking only on the
swim platform. Oh, it was 30F in ATL when I got off the plane last night
and Spirit lost my bag with jacket and long pants.

Hey Glenn,
It's still nice to see how the big boys do it. It can be very educational.
It is especially eye opening when you get to see yard service on these
things when all the pretty panels are removed.

My friends billionaire boss has a 120-something super yacht he rode to the
Monaco Boat Show from the western end of the Panama Canal. Between the big
fillup in Bermuda and the Azores, they had to come off plane onto trawler
speed because the boat only holds 10,000 gallons of diesel and they WEREN'T
GONNA MAKE IT AT HIGH SPEED! While he was aboard, from the western end of
the Panama Canal to Monaco stopping at Miami, Bermuda, Azores, Gibraltar on
the way for more fuel, I think they burned something like 35,000 gallons!

Mastercard, VISA, Discover, Carte Blanche and other major credit cards
accepted. What's YOUR credit limit?....(c;

35000 gallons at $4/gallon.....(gulp)

I always wonder what the big boys pay considering the fuel comes in a
lighter a tug brings alongside. That's got to be charged to someone,
right?

I'm sure they are paying $4/gallon in Bermuda or Azores or Gibraltar, but
not Miami unless provisions haven't been made ahead of time. Fuel oil is
$6/gallon across most of the socialist world, from the heavy tax load to
pay for socialized medicine, etc.

Call it sticker shock. We haven't used more than 9 gallons a year for
the past 3 or 4, haven't used 100 gallons in any year.

And, frankly, I find it hard to believe that they're enjoying their
time on the water more than we are.

Talked to the engineer/purser. He said that it cost about $1 million a year
to keep her running. She is available for charter by the week for about the
cost of Rutu's spars, sails, rigging, winches and engine. :-)

Actually, I really mean: they can't enjoy their time as much as we (you
and we) do.

Rutu's your labor of love. Xan-à-Deux is our pleasure dome for two (and
saying what I'm remembering would be rude).

I wouldn't trade you a week of Rutu "work" against a week of enjoying
Xan, but I can easily accept your joy of creation, and wouldn't mind
contributing given a chance and free time. As an ex-cabinet maker, I
know the joy of creating and hope to heap appropriate accolades upon
you when I observe your lovely creation

BUT after a few years of a fairly good salary while I tried to build, I
decided to buy what existed instead.

Time spent with a happy lady DEFINITELY trumps time spent building,
chipping and scraping.

And time spent out in a secluded anchorage in a functional boat with
same happy lady ....

Oh, GAWD! (particularly when repeated!)

Sorry, I'm not trashing you at all, but I want to warn others who think
they might have your obsession to do it to for the RIGHT reasons.

Xan's only 28 feet, but she's fully functional and fully paid for, so
trumps any behemoth connected to the Bank (or under construction).
