Stolen luxury yacht found

shipshape

Police lack suspects after tip leads to boat at Bahamas marina

BY STEVE REEVES
Of The Post and Courier Staff

A luxury yacht stolen under the cover of darkness from Charleston's
City Marina on Jan. 7 was found Wednesday night near the town of
Freeport, a playground for the rich and privileged on Grand Bahama
Island.

Investigators still don't know who sailed the vessel 500 miles to
Freeport or why.

Acting on a tip, Bahamian police and U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency
agents found the $750,000 Beneteau 57 in good condition at Running Mon
Marina and Resort, investigators said Thursday. The yacht, which is
owned by Atlanta physician Glen McIntosh, is one of only 35 built so
far and the only one in North America.

The sailboat could have gone unnoticed for weeks at the nearly
deserted marina, which has a reputation for criminal activity, Derr
said. The Beneteau 57 was one of two boats docked at the 70-slip
marina.

"A number of stolen boats have been recovered from this particular
marina over the years," Derr said.

Freeport is a major tourist destination that attracts 1 million
visitors each year. Its deep-water port is home to at least six cruise
lines. The 30-room Running Mon Marina and Resort is closed for
refurbishing, according to its Web site.

The town of Freeport, a 230-square-mile free trade zone established in
1955 by the government of the Bahamas, is at the crossroads of routes
between European and North and South American trade links and
international shipping transiting through the Panama Canal.

The yacht's owner, who bought the sailboat one week before it
disappeared from City Marina on Lockwood Avenue in Charleston, could
not be reached for comment Thursday.

Police are focusing their investigation on finding who stole the
sailboat, which has a 75-foot mast and weighs more than 47,000 pounds,
said Lt. J.E. Williams of the Charleston Police Department.

"We've got some good leads, and we feel confident we'll get to the
bottom of it," he said.

Williams said this is the first time he's investigated "a boat theft
of this scale."

"It's a good feeling to know we recovered it," he said.

One question that troubles Chuck Laughlin, the owner of St. Barts
Yachts in Charleston, who sold the Beneteau 57 to McIntosh, is how the
thief or thieves were able to slip aboard the yacht and sail into the
night unnoticed.

"I hope they catch the people who did it so we can see what the
process was and learn what we can do to keep it from happening again,"
Laughlin said.

That's odd, Mozilla went right to the article.

You probably have the cookie machines turned off, etc. Opera went to
all the articles, too. It has nothing "open". No Java, no
javascript, no Macromedia spammers like Flash on the system and
Webwasher (www.webwasher.com) is standing in the way of the spammers
and spyware installers against the guard shack by the gates.

I think it was Running Mon in the Bahamas that was empty not the one
in Charleston.

The question is more why didn't all the boaters in City Marina notice
the boat being stolen. A good reason to have more live-aboards who
would be noticing such things.

That's not too tough to figure, since most boats are ridiculously easy
to break into. Wouldn't be surprised if the owners weren't known by the
rest of the dock, and it could have been done late at night.

My questions a why take it in the first place, and why take it to the
Bahamas? You're not going to be able to use a brand new 57' anything
very long. They get noticed. Can't clear in or out without papers; can't
do much more than they did and they'll likely have some explaining to do
to get out of the Bahamas.

Joy ride? Drugs? Smuggling?

Thanks to all who pointed our that I should stick to Opera and get the

I used to run Netscape, but it got buggy as hell after version 5.

It's a javascript driven redirect, turn of javascript, no redirect.
Don't know how you turn that off in IE, but it's pretty simple in the
Mozilla family.

Thanks to all who pointed our that I should stick to Opera and get the
hell out of IE. I use separate news readers and mail programs, so it's
not like I'd miss the squirrelly thing.

I used to run Netscape, but it got buggy as hell after version 5.

The greedy Beach Company is one problem. The other problem is some
idiot built SEAWALLS around the City Marina. 1/2 the marina now is a
mud-pit at low tide. Many boats have their underwater fittings
plugged with mud, twice a day.

How stupid......

Tell me about it. The tide went out when we had the dinghy at their dinghy
dock. It was sitting in the mud. I step off the dock into the mud.... and
plunge up to my crotch in soft ooze. Very funny to watch according to my
wife. I nearly lost my Tevas in the stuff too!

Only Jesus can walk on PLUFF MUD.....(c;

The city built the container to put the pluff mud into. The Ashley
River simply filled up the box.

There's 30' of water under E-dock at Ashley Marina....

I have always docked at the Ashley Marina, as at the time the
City Marina had been closed due to hurricane damage. Since that
time I have been into the City Marina one time and never again.
