Now that you've got your travel queries squared away, can you tell those of
us who are dying to know where in Oz you are from, what's the boat you're looking at and where you plan to voyage? I'm intrigued - sounds like you're well advanced in your planning. Hoges in WA |

I'm intrigued - sounds like you're well advanced in your planning. Hoges in WA I sold my business here in Northern Tasmania last year and retired early. Renovated my house and put it on the market this year. I've got a list of three boats to look at, all 351 Beneteaus. Two are ex charter. Plan is to cruise the Caribbean for 18 months then up the East Coast and across to the Med. I was originally planning on a bigger boat and finding crew for each leg but I wouldn't want to be stuck in a marina because someone didn't turn up. Or worse, have to accept someone I should've turned away. I'm sure regulars on this group know what I mean. So I'll single hand a 35 foot boat. Trouble is the house sale fell through and I've had to re-list it. That's put me back a bit. Thanks for your interest Hoges. You and the rest of this group have been very helpful. I'm in WA (near Bunbury) Also looking at up the east coast and across to Ireland/UK/Med but that before Caribbean as I plan to buy in Florida. There's two of us so Tayana 43 is in the frame at the moment. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be interested in ongoing reports if you'd oblige. Hoges in WA |

Would suggest very strongly that you look at other boats in preference to Beneteaus. Hardly any ocean cruisers have them as they are not the type of craft suited to ocean sailing. Have only seen one amongst the 100's of cruising boats that we have come across. I believe there is a Najad in Tassie that would be worth a look. (Aurora III). I will be returning to Aust later this year by air then will head for Tassie to see family. Would be glad to help out if possible. I was in the same position as you 8 years ago. Regards Tony |

Regards Tony I think Aurora III has been sold. Lovely, but these boats are beyond my means. I'm basically a coastal cruiser Tony and that's why I've settled on Beneteau. They seem to me to have an adequate hull structure and rig. For the price of these boats I figure I can spend some money tailoring the rest to my liking. I only intend to make one ocean passage in it. When the time comes, if I'm not comfortable with the risk, I'll stick it on a ship for that leg. |
