Live Aboard Situation in S. Florida
 

I am coming back from the Caribbean to find work. I plan on first
checking out South Florida and am looking for information on living
aboard either at a Marina or a private canal dock. I also would like
any tips on places to anchor where it is safe to leave a boat
unattended and the local marine cops do not look to hassle you. TIA

Larry, we keep our 40 foot ketch (6 foot draft) at Legacy Marina in Fort
Myers for $440 per month.. Yearly rates are less.. They welcome live
aboards, and it's convenient to shopping downtown.. No hassles with
anyone.. Wifi is available, cable and water are included, and electric is
metered.. Anchoring out in the river is also an option..

Plenty of help wanted ads in this area, although you didn't say what you
do.. Let me know and I'll be more specific..

Diana, thanks for the reply. I am a live sound engineer and think
that the best opportunities in my field are probably on the east
coast, although I may find that the cost of living is outrageously
more expensive and that there are good opportunities on the gulf
coast. I have been looking for work from afar and still need to wait
out hurricane season and sail up to the mainland. Sounds like Legacy
at Ft Myers is affordable. I bought my boat at a marina in Palmetto
FL and kept it there for 3 months while fitting and fixing. It was
similarly priced $350 plus inflation for a 37'.

I understand Larry... The east coast probably has more opportunities in
your field.. We came down the ICW in June, stopping along the way, and
found marinas expensive and full.. Dinner key marina did have some slips,
but I didn't determine at what price..

I can tell you this... If you wish to avoid being hassled by the
protectors of the environment, and the defenders of local law, I'd
seriously consider any place but SE Florida.. Just my opinion of course,
but I lived there for 9 years, on board and on shore, and I hope I never
go back..

I grew up (if I ever really did grow up) on snead island, 3 miles west of
palmetto... All I remember, from way back then, are the snead island boat
works, and the bradenton municipal marina.. I'm guessing there must be
more by now (?)

Larry, if you decide to look for job opportunities in S.W. Florida I
reccomend- Southwest florida help wanted.com
